At last - a book on white water safety and rescue written for British/European paddlers by British paddlers. Whilst US based texts are good in their concept and content, the dyanmics of US rivers are often different to those found in the UK, and therefore require a different safety and rescue strategy. Franco Ferrero, with contributions from other notable paddlers such as Loel Collins, covers a complete river strategy including hydrology and grading, scouting, leadership, safety and rescue. Many rescue techniques are covered, with the emphasis firmly placed on speed and simplicity, rather than complex rope techniques (these are covered however, with a specific need in mind). Given this book's focus on safety as well as rescue, it should prove to be a welcome addition to any paddlers bookshelf. Maybe the authors will consider making a video based on the book...

Today the skill of the average paddler is higher than ever before but situations and accidents still happen! This book is written by Franco Ferrero, Head of Canoeing at Plas y Brenin, who is one of the countries foremost practitioners and a respected white water paddler. It deals not only with how to rescue but with the whole topic of safety. It is divided in to four major sections with twenty nine chapters covering white water safety, white water rescue, care of victims and recovery / access. It contains sixteen pages of full colour photographs interspersed with black and white photographs along with clear diagrams, not only covering kayaking, but with useful contributions on traditional open boating by Ray Goodwin, WW open boat by Dave Luke and rafts by Bob Timms. Well laid out and easy to read, where this book really scores is from the author's own personal experiences and reflections with plenty of 'top tips and handy hints', and is certainly a useful 'tool' for those working towards the BCU's 5 star awards. There are some well chosen words of advice for professional instructors and also for bodies such as fire and rescue personnel who often get involved in rescue/recoveries. A set of appendices including knots and hitches complements the text. White Water Safety and Rescue is extremely comprehensive, written with a British flavour it places equal importance on both the motor skills and cognitive side of safety, not only thoughtful but thought provoking and is a highly recommended reference in the library of any canoe-sport coach or white water paddler.

White water safety and rescue brings together essential information and techniques that are useful to anybody involved in moving watersports.
The book contains a wealth of information, from the basics of reading water through to incident management and rescue techniques.
The techniques and "golden nuggets" are presented in a clear unclutted manner. The use of diagrams, colour photos and cartoons all make this book very usable.
I especially liked way the information was presented and complemented. The book is solid, both in terms of content and presentation - which is something that is to be expected of the author and the books contributors.

White Water Safety and Rescue is a well thought out, well laid out book which contains a wealth of useful information. Its topic is a serious one, and often an area that is overlooked by white water paddlers and rafters. The book contains excellent diagrams, concise and easily understandable text and provides a lot of food for thought.
Franco Ferrero is a well respected high level coach and is very involved with developing current practice in a number of paddlesport activities. He has made a very serious and often difficult subject easy to access and enjoyable to learn.
An excellent book, and a definite purchase for all paddlers who venture onto white water.

This book covers pretty much everything you could possibly need to know for venturing out into moving water. The topics are presented in a concise fashion with a well-balanced mix of writing, highlights, pictures, diagrams and anecdotes.

Although the book is primarily directed towards river runners, much of the content is also relevant to sea kayaking, in particular the sections about paddling technique, equipment, clothing, hypothermia, panicked swimmers, First Aid and rope dynamics.

The book itself is well laid out, making it easy to find exactly what you're looking for.

Really easy reading. This book Is straight forward with good pictures and therefore doesn't leave a lot to go wrong.

Certainly no replacement for a white water safety course but great pre reading or as revision afterward.
