A fascinating account of the development of the self-styled nazi terror movement, Combat 18. The detail is impressive and the book makes compelling reading. Trouble is, apart from a few punch-ups with the Socialist Workers' Party and some in-fighting with rival national socialists, C-18 doesn't seem actually to have done very much (yet)! Furthermore,Nick Lowles may write well but he's hardly impartial in his treatment of the material. His far-left credentials are well-documented and his contempt for the nationalist right is apparent from the outset; a shame as a less partisan approach to what is a very interesting subject might have proved more illuminating.

A very detailed account of C18, albeit written from the POV of a recognised far left journal. Some inaccuracies but on the whole worth a read

The author has written a scincilating account of the most terrifying, hypocrital and violent racist group ever in he history of the UK. He explores it's emergence as the violent arm of the BNP, it's separation from that party and it's attempted expansion across Europe to the divide between it's leaders and fall from socialist power. The book, to me highlights the hypocrosy of these groups with their ever changing beliefs and hatred for each other. Thoroughly enjoyed it and found it difficult to put dowm once I had started reading it.

Stereotypical account of the right wing. Accounts of gross violence by neanderthals but very little on their political views.
Easy reading and suitable to basically anyone interested in political pressure groups. Although you have to make your own mind up as to the truth of some of the accounts and personalities.
It is easy to force your own view when writing a book thru semi truths.

I reviewed the first edition of this book years ago, so won't waste too much time on the second edition, even though it covers a lot of new ground. To the uncritical reader it is well-written, and if it were literature rather than a supposed historical document, it would more than pass muster. However...the first thing the reader should note is that it does not contain a single citation, nor even a bibliography. Even if it did, the sources would be dubious, knowing who its author is, and what he is, but how about this from page 51? Of a certain Mr Browning's relationship with his girlfriend he writes: "On one of his trips abroad he bought her a tin of biscuits as a present. On another, left to his own devices in an airport duty free shop, he presented her with a bottle of Polo Sport for men".

How does Lowles know this? Did either of the individuals concerned tell him, or did he simply make it up to make Browning look stupid? How about something for which he could have given a citation or two? Of the notorious Harold Covington he writes, he believed "Jews were out to destroy the white race". Why not give a citation for that, or better still from where Wicked Harold derived this belief, could it have been Barbara Lerner Spectre? Hardly, her poisonous pronouncements have emerged only in the last few years. How about from pundit Joel Stein? No, he only claims Jews control the American media, and as long as they keep on controlling it, he doesn't care what the goyim think. How about Noel Ignatiev, the American Jew academic who calls for the abolition of the white race, or Magnus Hirschfeld, the man who coined the word "racism", or better still Franz Boas who as long ago as 1910 called for racial amalgamation in the United States?

Great Book!
What this book ignores/fails to address is the extreme left wing terror tactics used at exactly the same time in the UK.
The Special Branch connection is interesting, the use of the 'World in Action' UK documentary throughout the book, word for word is somewhat lazy. Left wing supporters are portrayed as innocent peacefull people!
Still it's a great read, but biased.

Very sloppy research. Just flicking though the book I noticed he said John Tyndall was tall, which he wasn't , also that Tyndall had been a member of the White Defence League, once again not correct, basic information like this is not hidden away but is in the public domain. The book is not really worth a star.
