This is a wonderful novel, easy to read and very well written, but also complex with depths of meaning. The local setting (Hong Kong) is spot on, not only the smells and tastes but also the way in which the main Chinese character (the amah) thinks, and how she views the world. I lived 20 years in China, and didn't detect a single false note in this book. The characters and story are also full of interest. One of the best novels I've read in a long while.

Through the eyes of the young narrator, Kate, the author creates a beautifully evocative picture of Honk Kong during the time of the Vietnam war. The images and descriptions are stunning, and I felt as if I was there with Kate, watching and waiting. The narrative flows with that strong sense of waiting for something to happen. Somehow, seen through Kate's eyes, events that are not connected grow in significance and the reader is swept along with Kate's belief that they could be.

Woven through the narrative, quietly and almost unseen, is the nature of the relationship between Kate and her older sister, Frankie, which reaches an eventful and startling climax. Kate is a reticent narrator, wanting to protect her sister and yet admitting that she has feelings for others with results in, I think, a sense of guilt because she wasn't wholly focused on Frankie when Frankie wanted her full attention.

It's a quiet book, and the action is subdued and lingering, rather than being obvious and loudly proclaiming itself. Not for everyone, I would say, but definitely for me.

Format: Paperback
A classic coming of age novel that comes with the added depth of a cultural menageree of smells and tastes described so well you can sense them on your lips and skin. However, in focusing on the rich descriptive aspects, the author fails to effectively build up a gripping storyline. Thus, when the slightly predictable culmination of the story occurs, you can't help but feel it came slightly abruptly. It was, nevertheless, a wonderful novel.

A wonderfully written book, the descriptions are such that you can literally smell the tiger balm and the josh sticks, you can almost feel the hot rain. The story is however decidedly lacking, nothing really happens. A good beach read.
