Review

“Noel Streatfeild’s position in the children’s book world is unique. She is endlessly inventive, full of verve and real understanding of the surfaces of childhood. Her stories are rich in documentary interest and entertainment, escapism of a most satisfying sort.”
TLS

“Noel Streatfeild is an author who is a true master of her craft.”
Illustrated London News

“White Boots. Author: Noel (Ballet Shoes) Streatfeild. And you know we might very well leave it at that – for what higher recommendation is wanted? Noel Streatfeild has that happy, skilful knack of turning her characters into real people – something which only really good novelists can do. A first-rate book.”
BBC Children’s Hour

From the Back Cover

White boots is an extraordinary book, which once you've read the first page is impossible to put down. The story plot is gripping and unpredictable. With a spectacular ending. I would recommend anybody to buy this book.

I read this book as a child. It captivated me then. I have recently bought it for my daughter and reread it. I throughly enjoyed it, my daughter did too.

I bought this for a train journey. I knew it would be a long and dull journey and I was looking for a book that was like a woolly blanket that I could snuggle down under.
White Boots is lovely. It's the story of two very different girls and their families who are thrown together by skating. Harriett is recovering from an illness and needs exercise to stop being so 'cotton-woolish'. Lalla is well on her way to being a child star of the rink. As the girls get to know each other, they also develop a deeper understanding of who they are themselves. This is a more nuanced book than 'Ballet Shoes'; the ensemble cast are well-developed with the story unfolding from multiple points-of-view (for example, Harriett's brothers who each have dreams of their own).
This is a great story for any young girl looking for a family story set in a glamorous world.

I read this book as an eleven year old and now twenty years later it still stays with me in my memory as one of the best books I ever read!
I wasn't sure if it would even still be in print. Thankfully it is, and is obviously appreciated by many. A great book for any age, but especially for adolescents - proof that if you really set your mind to it you can achieve anything.

What a lovely story! First published in 1951, this is the perfect story for young girls. A spoilt only child who is destined to become the next skating star receieves her comeuppance when she makes friends with a poor, ill child who has been prescribed to take up skating to improve the strength in her legs. White Boots explores the friendship between the two girls, their winnings and failures as amateur skaters and the lifestyles of the two very different families. Streatfeild can write very humorously sometimes, considering this book was written in the 50s. In general, just a lovely children's book. I've only read four of Streatfeild's novels so far but I've loved every one of them, both as a child and as an adult.

I bought this for my ten year old granddaughter to go with her ice skating birthday gift. We are reading it together and both of us are enjoying it. It is not the kind of book she would generally read as it is quite dated in parts and I have to give a little background or explain. It is a lovely story and a glimpse into bygone days; just right for Nana and granddaughter! Hopefully we can go on to Ballet shoes next.

This is one of my favorite books, and I am sad to say that I can only find it in California in the library. It is about a poor family where the girl gets sick, and is tired of watching to boats in the river, so her doctor suggests that she try ice-skating. The day she first tries ice-skating, Lalla's nurse introduces herself to Heather (the sick girl)'s mother. The nurse introduces the two girls which starts a good friendship, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes ice-skating, or just a plain good book. By the way, if you are from the USA, and have read the US version, it was called (though sadly out of print) Skating Shoes.

Loved reading this when I was a child and it's still a charming story of it's time which my skating mad 9 year old is now reading to me and stretching her vocabulary. Glad the illustrations are still the same and enjoying sharing this with my daughter.
