I read this book after having heard a brief description of it on a radio programme. I felt that I could relate to it as I was also brought up to this style of life - minus the Cruelty Man ofcourse - namely Elgin in the North of Scotland. I know 'The Close' and the 'Lido' so well. I was a young girl at this time, innocent and eager to explore what the 'City' had to offer. I felt that I knew the inhabitants of the Close and Jessie Kesson told this story as I would like to have done. However, even though I personally had a close affinity with the story, I felt that anyone could pick up this book and be immediately transported back to that era of poverty, yet happiness. I could not lay the book down and as it is a very small but exciting read you can easily finish it in a short time. I shall read it again.

I bought this book because the Abbey Theatre in Arbroath are performing the play next month and because I was brought up in Nairnshire, spending time also in Morayshire I felt I had to read 'The White Bird Passes'.
There is nothing I can say to the detriment of this wonderful book which more or less tells the life of it's authoress.
I am so looking forward to seeing this story acted out on stage.

The White Bird Passes is a vivid and lyrical account of Janie MacVean’s spirited resilience in the face of profound deprivation. In this slim volume, Kesson captures the realities of Scottish working class life in the 1920s, and does so with deep compassion for her characters. Take a peek at Janie describing her mother on page 123, in the beautiful passage that begins: “All the things I know, she taught me…” - breathtakingly beautiful.

A moving and utterly exquisite novel – I cannot praise it highly enough.

Jessie Kesson's brief but vivid and poetic novel is based on her own childhood in a rundown close in a Scottish town in the 120s. It is a wonderful account of childhood and also reflects the effects of poverty and the limited opportunities for women in the early 20th Century. Highly recommended.

Arrived quickly. Several odd and ends within the slightly tatty book, old photos, flyers etc.
