The story has a brutal and believable realism. From the powerful and disturbing opening, the suspense builds superbly and swiftly before the true terror of the situation is revealed and the reader is left breathless as the action escalates further.
In fact I believe that Whispers would make an excellent movie – though it would have to be a gritty ‘15’ rated thriller, not some glossy Hollywood pastiche.
I feel that the characters are well described making it easy to visualise and relate to them.
From the various flawed but likeable ‘good guys’ to the assorted unpleasantness of the antagonists, everyone is fleshed out just enough. There are no two dimensional cardboard cut-out heroes or villains here!
Ms Kovach also paints a beautiful impressionist picture of the area of Turkey in which the book is set.
It has to be something that can only come from having spent time there, observing everyday life and exploring off the beaten track. You can smell the trees, taste the dusty air and feel the warmth of the sun on your bones as you read.
Serve with a large Ouzo and a slice of Baklava for added sensation.
Despite being written by a female author do not, for one moment, think that this is some fluffy chick-lit.
This is a proper full-blooded thriller, very much like those from Alex Kava and Karin Slaughter, and one that I’m sure will appeal to blokes too. After all I really enjoyed it and I’m more of an action-adventure reader.
Finally, although this is a stand-alone novel with a good solid ending, I think that there is scope for a follow on to ‘Whispers’. I feel sure there are further stories to be told of the area and the events taking place around there.
I’d certainly like to read more. Any chance Ms Kovach?
If you like non-stop thrills, spills and suspense, this is a book you shouldn't miss. I read it in one sitting.
It is the story of Eve and her friends who go to Turkey on holiday and meet some rather - ok, very - unpleasant people.
I can definitely recommend it, and if you are thinking of going to Icmeler on holiday, do go - it is a fabulous place :-D and I don't think that what happens in this book will really happen to you.
Scary, heart-pounding and very enjoyable. Well done Carla.
