Review

" Bruce Bawer reveals how self-acclaimed European morality proves abjectly amoral in its appeasement of radical Islamic anti-Semitism, homophobia, gender apartheid, and religious intolerance. A sensitive and sober portrait of an increasingly insensitive and reckless continent."
-- Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and author of "Carnage and Culture" and "An Autumn of War"

" An honest and engaging account of a problem which, if left unaddressed, could engulf Europe in conflict. Europeans would do well to heed Mr. Bawer's advice and open their eyes."
-- Abraham H. Foxman, National Director, Anti-Defamation League; author, "Never Again? The Threat of the New Anti-Semitism"

" Bawer paints an alarming picture of a continent in deep trouble and deeper denial-- but now, perhaps, on the verge of waking up. Some books are merely important. This one is necessary."
-- Jonathan Rauch, senior writer and columnist for "National Journal "magazine in Washington and a correspondent for the" Atlantic Monthly"

" Bruce Bawer has produced a book that is at once riveting, disturbing, fascinating, chilling, and shocking. It is required reading for anyone who wants to understand how militant Islam has insinuated itself into the heart of the West."

-- Steven Emerson, Executive Director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism and author of "American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Amongst Us
"
" Bruce Bawer brings an American' s sensibilities and a writer' s insights to bear on the insistence by West Europeans that theyreally do not have a Muslim problem. Backed by deep research and wide personal experience, he argues that this blind denial is leading the continent to certain disaster. Bawer makes his case moderately but eloquently and powerfully. Will Europeans heed his warning?"
-- Daniel Pipes, Director, Middle East Forum

" Bawer punctures the moral pretensions of our ' betters' in the Old World. Their supine acceptance of the Muslim oppression of women, their flatulent anti-Americanism, their renewed anti-Semitism-- all are fully documented. There is something memorable on every page. Bawer writes with intelligence and passion. A fascinating analysis of Europe' s death spiral."
-- Mona Charen, syndicated columnist and author of "Useful Idiots"

From the Inside Flap

Bruce Bawer has lived in Europe since 1999. WHILE EUROPE SLEPT is his enlightening and disturbing report on anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment in Europe and on the egregious failure of European liberals to confront Islamic extremism in their own countries. Traveling to major cities and talking with people in trains, cafes, restaurants, and on street corners, Bawer came face-to-face with the peculiar mix of moralistic smugness and abysmal ignorance that feeds the rising tide of hatred toward the United States. He found, as well, a widespread refusal to grapple with problems caused by a growing Islamic presence in Europe-from the violation of immigration laws to appalling incidents of honor killings to horrific acts of terrorism, including the assassination of a prominent Dutch politician and the March 2003 bombing in Madrid.
Bawer warns that Europe can no longer ignore the clash of civilizations raging on its own territory and around the world. Failure to recognize the problems and react quickly, he predicts, will lead to a virulent right-wing nationalism of a kind not seen since the 1930s.

The book is quite well-written and indeed a page-turner. The main problem is that the writer comes accross as being quite biased to islamic immigrants due to bad personal experiences. If the reader is quite knowledgable on the subject of immigration and islam, then he/she can read between the lines and concentrate on the hard facts (the book is abundant of them) without being influenced by the writer's personal opinion and - some times - bitterness. I recommend reading this book only if you have already read other books dealing with the same subject (arguing for or against). I do agree with the author's opinion that the multi-cultural model (the way it has been implemented in Europe) has failed miserably and it is imperative to change it drastically and fast. I also agree with the opinion that Europeans (I am also European) have failed to integrate immigrants as effectively as they have been integrated in other countries (especially the U.S.A.).

"While Europe Slept" should be read by Europeans and Americans who are concerned about the future of personal liberty, democracy, and human rights on planet earth. Bawer argues that Europe is dying and that "Eurabia" is being born (a term borrowed from Bat Ye'or, an Islamic scholar). This is because Muslims are flooding into Europe at an alarming rate and are having more kids than the native Europeans. Within fifty years, Muslims will be the majority in some European countries.

Will a growing Muslim population in Europe be a threat to personal liberty, democracy, and human rights? It appears so. Already, Muslims in Europe have set up societies within their host societies (e.g., Germany, France, Sweden, etc) and are causing social unrest among the native populations (murdering those who "insult" Islam, individually or gang raping women, beating up gays, practicing honor killings and female genital mutilation, not letting women out of the house without an escort, calling for a ban on alcohol and entertainment, lighting cars on fire and smashing shop windows, etc). The police in these countries often feel overwhelmed by the Muslim gangs roaming the streets and are often afraid to go into Muslim ghettos for fear of being attacked; the only time the police will go into such neighborhoods is if they have lots of backup.

One lingering thought I had while reading "While Europe Slept" was whether or not there will be civil war in Europe. Will the radical Muslims try to take power away from the natives, overthrow the liberal democracies, and set up Islamic states? Will the radical Muslims then set their sights on other countries, too, like America?

Before you buy this book, you should ask yourself a simple question: am I interested in radical Islam in Europe and do I doubt the PC "elites" ability to deal with it? If the answer is yes, then you will enjoy this book. This book is not written by a neo-con, nor is it written by an apologist for terrorism. It is written by an openly gay man, who has lost faith in the political left that was supposed to champion his rights. Written from this extremely novel perspective, the author describes his initial fascination with pro-gay, secular Europe contrasting with what is in his opinion at least, the highly religious homophobic USA. However, as he witnessed the excesses of Muslim radicals in Europe, and the spinelessness of the European "elites" to deal with them, he became disenchanted, and as a consequence came to appreciate the more strident stance of Americans. Indeed, a recurrent theme is his disbelief that EU elites can be so obsessed with "dialogue" with terrorists dedicated to their destruction, and he is amazed that the EU can be so contemptuous of the USA when America is the only Western nation with the resolve to deal with radical Islam, and which is actually Europe's protector.

The book also covers a number of harrowing accounts, such as honour killings, the authors own assault at the hands of radicalised youths and descriptions of various Al-Qaeda attacks in Europe, such as the Madrid and London bombings, and the assassination of Theo Van Gogh. He also show cases some of the increasingly bizarre PC platitudes of Europe's political and media "elite" in the face of terrorism, and laments the passive nature of European populations.

Any criticism today of violent, fundamentalist Islam is tarred as ignorant at best, far-right racism at worst by lazy, politically correct Amazon reviewers and political commentators.
Bruce Bawer doesn't fit the stereotype the PC mob would like though, an intellectual gay man who wrote this book to air his genuine fears about what is happening all over Western Europe. Islamic, race-hate murders of Jews in France unreported by the media there, Muslims walking around European countries wearing shirts emblazoned with the year Sharia law will be imposed there, the far-left becoming bedfellows with some of the most fanatical, violent, homophobic, murderous people on Earth, purely because they have Anti-Americanism in common.
Writing about things like this happening in Europe doesn't make Bruce Bower racist or bigoted, it makes him someone concerned about the future of European civilisation and culture in the face of an aggressive, fundamentalist, unchecked onslaught. This book is unfairly rated, a look at any of the single star ratings will tell you that, and Bruce Bower should be applauded for a brave book.
