Review

'A lovely mixture of poetry and narrative with stunning illustrations which bring to life the rural, charming world of young Pippa.' -- The Bookseller The Bookseller 'This will be a book to keep and treasure.' -- The Bookseller The Bookseller 'Stunningly drawn, it makes you want to rush outside as it evokes the joy and glory of being in the fresh air.' -- Sunday Times Sunday Times 'Marvellous for instilling in children a love of language and a delight in poetry.' -- We Love This Book We Love This Book 'This book has to be one the most engaging and appealing ever produced! Just opening the front cover has you longing to explore. ... Every parent should read it to their children.' -- The Landsman The Landsman 'beautifully and tenderly illustrated [...] a book to treasure and inspire.' -- Parents in Touch Parents in Touch A highly-illustrated book, a collection of 40 poems, a celebration of childhood, exploration and discovery, presented exquisitely as a child's scrapbook. In the book we follow Pippa, who is visiting her Aunty Peggy, as she takes a long walk through the countryside, going where ever her Wellies take her. As the journey unfolds we experience the idyllic surroundings, rolling hills, village churches, farm animals grazing. We see the rich variety of wildlife and the different people Pippa encounters along the way. Each poem in the book has been carefully chosen by Clare and Michael Morpurgo to complement each part of the story. The book is a treasure trove of inspiration; it truly is a work of art. It is filled with maps, cuttings, pull out pages, observational drawings, landscapes, portraits and tracing paper pages that mask and reveal glorious illustrations alongside beautifully written poetry. The possibilities and potential for using this book as a teaching and learning resource are boundless. My wife is a secondary school art teacher and wants to use the book to model how to use sketchbooks. As a primary school teacher, I see it as a tool to instil an early love of poetry in the children I teach. It think it will be a great stimulus for whole units of work. I am inspired by this book! Ideas are rushing through my head about how I am going to use it to teach across the curriculum: Discovery walks around the local area, map reading, sketch book work, drawing with charcoals and pastels, using mixed media, photography, collage, flower pressing, poetry reading, diary entries, local history, living things and their habitats, figurative language, observational studies, life cycles and all presented in their very own personal scrapbooks. -- James Syner Magpiethat

Clare and Michael Morpurgo's first ever book together is inspired by their childhood and shared love of the countryside. They both grew up in the countryside and enjoyed exploring their surroundings.
The story is about young girl, Pippa - and follows Pippa as she goes on her favourite walk around the village and country lanes. Each page is detailed with vivid illustrations and poems, which are all linked to the story.
This is a beautiful book. It is put together a bit like a scrapbook and each page is a joy to discover. The text is handwritten and younger readers may struggle with it - I would say it's suitable for readers aged around 8-9 upwards, and adults will really love and appreciate this special book. The Illustrations are outstanding and captures the magic of nature and the countryside.
All royalties received from Where My Wellies Take Me will be donated to Farms for City Children, a charity created by the Morpurgo's, and gives inner-city children the chance to experience life on a farm.

Absolutely beautiful book which I have bought 2 copies of for my pressie cache. I have been a fan of Michael Morpurgo for years and as a retired teacher I introduced my pupils to the books long before Michael became famous. I came across this book and was enthralled by the beautiful illustrations, as well as Michael's choice of classic poems. Although the central character is an eight year old girl it would appeal equally to both sexes and when I first came across it the owner was male.

This book is an amazing read, there is so much content in the illustrations and lots of intricate details in the format, clearly lots of thought has gone into its clever design. This is a book that will grow with you and become a family classic as with each read your attention is pulled in and you go on a journey not only through the countryside with the main character but also on a literary one as you discover stunning pieces of poetry and atmospheric, emotive writing.

What a beautiful book. Every page is full of lovely drawings and notes. It is like an artist's sketchbook with so many of my favourite childhood poems in. I read some to my 12 year old granddaughter [it is a present for her 5 year old copusin] and it was a great 'shared' time. I might just have to buy another one to keep at home for their visits!!!
