Product Description

Product Description

During World War II, seven Allied agents are selected to rescue an American general from the impenetrable German fortress Schloss Adler. In charge of the team is British Major Smith (Richard Burton), with American Lieutenant Schaffer (Clint Eastwood) as second in command. Parachuting into the enemy territory in German uniforms, the squad discover one of their number dead on arrival, and Smith suspects that he may have a traitor amongst his unit. Alistair Maclean wrote the screenplay and the film is reported to be amongst director Quentin Tarantino's favourites.

Synopsis

Commandos, posing as German soldiers, parachute into a city to rescue asupposed allied General from a Nazi hideaway fortress that can only be reached by cable car.

If the transfer of this film was a showcase for Blu Ray no one would buy any. Having seen this film in 70mm years ago I know what quality is possible and this disc falls well short of that. So if you already own the DVD - save your money - as this disc will not enhance your enjoyment, in fact I think it's worse. Maybe next time the studio will get it right and even put the intermission back in.

Basically this is a five star movie on a one star disc which for me dispels the idea that a Blu Ray disc, by implication, is better quality.

I cannot see that the June 2010 Blu Ray is any better than the dvd version. In cases it is very dark and doesn't seem as good as the DVD! I think the same print must have been used and no effort seems to have been made to remaster or clean up. What a shame. Where Eagles Dare is one of my favourite WW2 films. Why issue this?

This Blu-Ray print has the poorest picture quality I have ever seen on Blu-Ray, washed out colours and low contrast. The recent (not necessarily the current) versions on DVD have far superior picture quality i.e. better colour rendition and contrast.

The film adapted from an 'Allister Mclean' adventure tale.
A team of seven are assembled by 'British' H.Q. to rescue an American General
being held at a remote castle in mountainous terrain, unbeknown to the majority
of the team, things are not quite as they seem.
The team are told they have to mount an operation to get to 'General Carnaby'
before he discloses military secrets, or in this case who he really is.
The team assembled are led by 'Major Smith' (Richard Burton) along with U.S
Lieutenant Shaffer' (Clint Eastwood) every member of the team speak fluent
German.
The team are parachuted into the target region, one of the team found to be dead
after landing, it is at an early stage obvious that his death is no accident.
The Castle and it's surrounds are well fortified with a heavy German troop presence,
the chances of success seem slim.
When reaching the town below the Castle, a second team member is killed, is there
an undercover agent among them ?
The Germans seem to be one step ahead as the remaining members of the team
are captured, however 'Lieutenant Shaffer' and 'Major Smith' escape to continue
the mission with the help of agent 'Mary Ellison' who has infiltrated the Castle
undercover.
This a well crafted and exciting adventure with plenty of explosive action along the way.
Picture Quality is superior to it's DVD version however is a little grainy, the sound quality
adequate,
Well worth a re-visit or indeed a first viewing.
Film ( 1968 ) 155 minutes.

"Broadsword calling Danny Boy." Say that line to anyone over the age of twenty five and they will immediately know which film you are talking about, possibly the greatest war movie of all time. No matter how many times I see this film, I never tire of it.
Everything about it is right on the money, excellent musical score, terriffic performances from Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood and some great action sequences. Check out Burton's fight atop the cable car or Eastwoods shoot out with the Nazi's. These two action sequences stand up to anything Hollywood can produce today and this film is thirty years old!!!
The best thing about "Where Eagles Dare" is it actually acknowledges that it wasn't just America that won the war, in this, the Brits actually play a vital role. Horrah!
That old saying; "They don't make them like they used to," may be well worn and overused, but in this case it is true. A wonderful film.

Directed by Brian G. Hutton and adapted to the screen from his own novel by Alistair MacLean, Where Eagles Dare stars Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. Music is scored by Ron Goodwin and cinematography is by Arthur Ibbetson.

A small group of allied agents are sent on a mission to rescue a Allied General from a Nazi castle stronghold. But there is more that what meets the eye here...

Boys own men on a mission in grandiose strokes, MacLean's complex story makes for riveting and exciting entertainment. The story twists and turns like a Python, so full attention to conversational details is very much required, yet it's the fun and kinetic action that hold the most attention. There are stunts galore amongst the Austrian Alps (beautifully photographed by Ibbetson), and as the espionage hokum reaches its crescendo status, so does the explosions, with the makers wasting no opportunity to blow everything up. Burton is classy and enjoying himself, Eastwood laconic and cool, while good support comes from Mary Ure, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern and Donald Houston. The running time is a touch too long as MacLean's prose is given weighty treatment for extended chatter, and some back projection work feels unnecessarily cheap, but this is good old machismo fuelled classic cinema regardless. 9/10

WED is the most entertaining war movie ever made. The great Burton & Eastwood infiltrate a snowy German castle fortess in order to perform a suicide rescue mission. The movie has everything- sneaking into the castle on top of a cable car (check the vertigo downhill shots) climbing up the side of the castle on ropes, Clint's cool shootout with two machine guns two handed, Burton's famous fight on top of the cable car. it's a rip roaring adventure to say the least, they don't make em like this anymore. Also starring is 'Ingrid Pitt' ding dong say no more. If you like WW11 movies & alot of action then get this DVD now. it also includes an On Location programme plus the original trailor. It's a wonderful movie.
