Review

Heath steals your heart, then takes you on a journey that will leave you torn between tears and joy. (Christina Dodd)

Heath is a consummate storyteller, whose characters leap from the pages. Their powerful emotions and intense passions translate exceptionally well to readers, allowing them to become deeply involved in the fascinating plot and leaving them breathless and wanting more. (RT Book Reviews (top pick) - 4.5 stars - Praise for LORD OF TEMPTATION)

“The Duke of Weddington is perfect hero material. Historical readers will clamor for more.” (Liz Carlyle)

“She writes the most powerfully moving love stories in romance today.” (Jill Barnett, RITA Award-Winner)

“She writes from the heart and it shows!” (The Literary Times)

“Sensitive, funny and altogether enchanting!” (Dallas News)

“Heath is known for her beautiful, deeply emotional romances, and this one is no different. ‘When the Duke Was Wicked’ is a perfect read, full of tears and sighs and a heroine who is shocked by her own strength.” (Washington Post)

“A sparkling, emotionally powerful historical romance.” (Kirkus Reviews)

About the Author

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA's prestigious RITA®. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

I haven't read Ms Heath's books for sometimes and reading the good review for this and thinking I would give it a try. This book was a MASSIVE disappointment. I requested it from my local library, I started the book in the library when I picked it up. It didn't make it out of the library door, I returned it before I left the library. The love between h/h was not convincing mainly because of the huge age gap between the widowed Duke who happened to be a good friend of her father, and teenage young lady gave a feeling of uncle and niece instead. The fact that this said young lady seems to have freedom of going to a bachelor's residency and gentleman's bedroom at all hours and unaccompanied sounds so untrue and impossible. Sorry, Ms Heath I couldn't make it to Chapter 5.
I read Ms Heath's books in the past and they were mostly OK read for me. Sad to say that this book is one of the worst I read this year so far.

I've bought most of Lorraine heaths books and loved them all, if you like light hearted historical romances with a bit of intrigue and of course rompy-pompy, then this is for you! It's about Lady Grace Mabry's coming into her 'ample' inheritance that has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her or her money. She asks her childhood friend, the very bitter, widowed Duke of Lovingdon (whom she has had a mega crush on all her life) to help her distinguish between beau from blackguard - and maybe at the same time help him get over the death of his wife and child, by maybe moving on with life with her. What starts off for him as simply unwillingly helping Grace find a proper match by demonstrating his wicked ways and teaching the lovely innocent all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman's favour, leads to a torrid passion between them. But due to his misgivings, Grace becomes ensnared in another man's marriage plot and, although Lovingdon has no interest in marriage and long lived only for pleasure since loosing his family - the race is on to save her from a dastardly end. He must decide whether to wage a desperate gamble and open his heart fully and make that final step to claiming Grace or risk losing her to another rake, the clock is ticking!

Not one of her best.
The story in itself is too bogus to ring true to the period and poetic licence has moved things from the 20th century to the 19th, something I find not acceptable. It quite ruined the whole thing for me. Shame really, the original series was soo..good.

This was a wonderful story of love and loss. The Duke in this tale feels that his life has ended after the tragic loss of his first wife and child so he devotes his life to mindless debauchery . He eventually agrees to help his childhood friend Lady Grace Maubry determine whether any of her many suitors actually love her as if anyone can spot a rotter he can. Little does he realise that he's the one she loves though she has rather lost hope in her feelings being reciprocated.
The story deals so sensitively with the issue of the loss of a wife and child and how it's possible to love again while not 'replacing' anyone.
Spoiler alert-Graces health issue was dealt with brilliantly ( I speak as a survivor) and I cried when I thought of how terrifying it must have been then to be treated for breastcancer - it's frightening enough now with all the help and support of modern medicine.
