Review

‘‘Pema’s deep experience and her fresh way of looking at things are like mountain water – clear and deep.’ Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart and After the Ecstasy, the Laundry.

‘As one of Pema Chödrön’s grateful students, I have been learning the most pressing and necessary lesson of all: how to keep opening wider my own heart.’ Alice Walker

‘It is a lively and accessible take on ancient techniques for transforming terror and pain into joy and compassion.’ O, the Oprah Winfrey magazine

From the Back Cover

There is a fundamental opportunity for happiness right within our reach, yet we usually miss it – ironically, while we are caught up in attempt to escape pain and suffering. In this book, Pema Chodron's shows:
• Ways to use painful emotions to cultivate wisdom, compassion and courage
• Ways to communicate that lead to openness and true intimacy with others
• Practices for reversing our negative habitual patterns
Methods for working with chaotic situations
• Ways to cultivate compassionate, energetic social action

Recently profiled in Oprah’s O magazine, Pema Chodron is a spiritual teacher for anyone – whether they have a spiritual path or not. Her heartfelt advice and wisdom (developed in her 20 years of practice as a Tibetan Buddhist nun as well as her years previously as a normal ‘housewife and mother’) give her a wide appeal. This advice strikes just the right note, offering us comfort and challenging us to live deeply and contribute to creating a more loving world.

Pema Chodron is one of my heroes, and this book has helped me through recovery from lymphoma. Having lived in the busy world of family and children before she became a full time Buddhist nun she completely understands the stresses and strains of everyday life. her writing is pure, honest and straight from the heart - and also really funny. Highly recommend this, and your life doesn't have to be falling apart to appreciate her wise words.

The author says of buddhism that it takes account of both the good and so-called bad without judging either. (My summary.) Instead what you get is practical advice based on age-old experience on how to break those deep-rooted in-grained patterns that one may scarcely even be aware of. These are the habits which make us repeat again and again (and again!) the same old behaviours which we wish we could be rid of but can't. This book excels in describing what the author sometimes refers to as tricks - although this makes it sound superficial which it is not. These "tricks" are really more like insights based on profound experience but which can be deadly relevant and presented without too much fanfare . This is the best explanation to my western mind of a day-to-day experience of buddhism that I have come across. The author's own experiences are included to explain where she is coming form. It is a no-nonsense guide, I would say only for someone who is serious about a change in their life - maybe someone who has tried other approaches without success - but if that cap fits then you might not find its equal. You just might end up having compassion - for yourself as well as others.

Heard about this book as somebody's choice on Desert Island Discs. It's full of sense and suggestions for when things seem hopeless, pointing out that 'hopeless' is an essential ingredient of life - in fact it's the point of life. I read it twice and now keep it by my bed for inspiration and to remind me that ostensible 'bad' times are really great opportunities to face one's demons and overcome them. It's really about being happy regardless of circumstance. It's helpful and practical.
