By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 8 Sept. 2009
Format: Audio CD
Although the musicians on this album are credited as a big band, most of the tracks here are ballads, while even the upbeat songs here are generally taken at a slower pace than you'll often hear elsewhere. Even so, this is a high quality album that is ideal for playing during those quieter periods during the festive holidays.

Harry wrote four songs here (When my heart finds Christmas, It must've been ol' Santa Claus, The blessed dawn of Christmas Day, I pray on Christmas) while two others (Parade of the wooden soldiers, Christmas dreaming) don't appear very often on Christmas albums. Of course, Parade of the wooden soldiers appears on the famous Phil Spector Christmas album, but my substantial collection of Christmas music only contains one other version, which is by the Andrews sisters but in a boxed set of their music, not a Christmas collection.

The remaining songs (Sleigh ride, Let it snow let it snow let it snow, Little drummer boy, Ave Maria, What child is this, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, O holy night, What are you doing New Year's Eve) are all well known and appear on plenty of Christmas albums, some more frequently than others.

For those who, like me, enjoy easy-listening jazz-pop music, this is a wonderful Christmas album that will give much pleasure during the festive season.

By Mary Whipple HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWER on 2 Jun. 2006
Format: Audio CD
A different sort of Christmas album, Harry Connick's CD features the big band sound, strong drums throughout, large choruses in many songs--and Harry Connick. With toe-tapping rhythms and a casual, relaxed attitude prevailing, Connick presents many swingy versions of traditional songs and a number of quiet, soft ballads, accompanied by strings and chorales. Subtlety is not part of the pattern here--the music is, for the most part, bold, celebratory, and full of spirit--with the drums setting the beat and emphasizing the rhythms. The romance of the ballads is emphasized by violins and female choruses.

Throughout the album, Connick sets the pattern of the songs in the first stanza, retaining that pattern throughout, restraining himself from offering improvisations or variations, which would be difficult, if not impossible, with his large orchestra and choral ensembles.

"When My Heart Finds Christmas" begins as a romantic song introduced by strings, and builds to a crescendo at the end, to the accompaniment of insistent drums. In "It Must Have Been Old Santa," upbeat, loud, and full of swing, Connick showcases the piano, with the drums sometimes competing with it. "The Little Drummer Boy" carries a big drum, and the treatment is louder and more assertive than usual.

"Ave Maria" begins as a solo piano, a pleasant change from the elaborate treatments of previous songs, with Connick singing at the midpoint, but Latin is not his "native language," and the passion one associates with this traditional music is missing in this track. "I Pray on Christmas," however, is a hand-clapping gospel song, a rousing performance, stirring for the listener. "What Are You Doing New Year's" offers wonderful sax variations, the only song on the CD in which jazz variations take place.

What great find this was. Connick's vocal talent is perfectly showcased by the HUGE 'big band' sound and this just has to be played LOUD! Old favourites like Rudolph, Ave Maria and Sleighride are given a Connick twist and mix well with original compositions. Santa Claus is a real footstomper, The jazzy arrangement of The March Of The Wooden Soldiers is a delght and the warm and mushy When My Heart Find Christmas is great for a cold xmas night. I can still see those chestnuts and that open fire....excellent.

Not a bad album, but like all Xmas albums this one has some, shall we say, stronger points than others. I love the swingin' tracks ( these are Harry at his best) but maybe, he should get rid of the HIP attitude on Parade of the wooden toys (too clever)or I pray for Xmas(Just does not work).... However, he does score really well on tracks such as Xmas dreaming and What are you doing New years Eve (which for my money is the best version of that song ever done)
The voice is excellent the arrangements by and large really good.... and for the price it is a swell album to have... I would buy it just to encourage more of today's "stars" to record good old fashioned xmas magic....

A very Christmas swing album that should put you in the Christmas mood whatever time of year it is. Some of the slower tracks loose their way a little but this still one of the best festive albums available. Plus this is priced at a very competitive price.

I bought this for my husband since we heard it at a friend's house in the US. Even though it's May he still plays this CD in the car as it's so uplifting and easy.
