Miss Pamela Effington fled London six years ago rather than face scandal, thanks to George Fenton, son of Viscount Penwick, bragging to his buddies. She lives and travels with Aunt Millicent, who uses her widowhood and vast wealth to live as she pleases. It seems that Aunt Millicent is known world wide by all who matter. Pamela knows it is not safe to succumb to Alexei, yet she now has takes with her a glorious memory to cherish forever. Imagine Pamela's surprise when she finds Alexei and his staff occupying the London townhouse that she has recently inherited.
Aunt Millicent suggests that Pamela and Alexei pretend to be engaged. This would help ease Pamela back into Society's good graces. After all, no one could think badly of her if a PRINCE wishes to wed her. When she breaks the engagement later, every eligible man will beg for her hand in marriage. However, Alexei finds himself drawn to Pamela without knowing why and Pamela is desperately keeping her secrets.
***** The author includes a character named Valentina. She is Alexei's traitorous cousin. She has spent her life trying to kill Alexei, for Avalonia's own good of course. Valentina resides in the townhouse as well, claiming to have changed. As much as I really wanted to hate Valentina, I simply could not! The author did such a fantastic job on this character that she actually steals the show often.Read more ›
Alexei might well be a temptation Pamela cannot resist... And Miss Pamela Effington is no dream. Certainly, succumbing to the prince's seduction was madness. Now she's come to her senses and is thankful their paths will never cross again. Even if they do, he had never truly seen her face. But they are both in for the shock of their lives. For back in London, determined to lead a blameless life, Pamela finds Alexei occupying her home - a townhouse she's only recently inherited and he refuses to leave. A feigned courtship seems an excellent idea, and soon the mystery and temptation begin all over again.

I don't know about anyone else, but I for one, am getting extremely tired of the plot device that has the hero (or heroine) convincing themself that for whatever silly reason, being with their beloved is not in the beloved best interest and then deciding that the best and only thing they can do (out of unselfish love of course) is to leave.
That unfortunately was the prevailing theme for the last third of this book. I had to really push myself to not skip to the ending and call it a day. When this theme circled around yet again at about forty pages before the end, I had just had enough.
Authors take note... it's been done and done to death. Enough of this tired and extremely overworked plot device. While it may well be the stuff of fairy tails, one can only read the same fairy tale so many times before it becomes boring as hell.
WHEN WE MEET AGAIN is a delightfully enchantingly story about a mysterious young woman who meets a handsome prince at a masked ball in Venice, Italy. They spend one memorable night filled with incredible passion together, and then part with the sunrise. Neither expected to see the other ever again. Victoria Alexander creates a thoughtful, intriguing and superbly romantic story about what happens when the two actually meet again in England...four years later.
The hero and heroine of this story are marvelously complex life-like characters. They aren't perfect -- they each have their own issues to deal with, and that's what makes them so appealing. The chemistry between Alexei and Pamela sizzles and the banter is exhilarating, as they try to come to terms with the undeniable attraction they feel for each other. The reader can't help but wish that these charismatic and endearing characters achieve their happily ever after ending. The novel also has an engaging cast of secondary characters that are clever, vivacious and so irresistible that you will find your self laughing out loud, as they too steal your heart.
The main theme of the story is a second chance at love, but there is also an underlying optimistic theme about personal growth -- accepting the foolish mistakes or poor choices we make in our lives... learning from them, putting them behind you, and moving on with your life.
Ms. Alexander has again crafted a fast paced, fascinating story that showcases her dynamic style of writing vibrant prose and scintillating dialogue -- that is intelligent, as well as, splendidly entertaining.
Also recommended: If you want to know more about Prince Alexei and the Kingdom of Greater Avalonia then read, THE PRINCE"S BRIDE and HER HIGHNESS, MY WIFE and of course, anything else by Ms. Alexander is always a great read.
