A few things to bear in mind; it may not be immediately obvious that this book is an educational tool. It's certainly not to be confused with Bruford's autobiography. This book really is for drummers only, and even then only those who are familiar with drum notation.
Assuming the above is within your capability - or that of your drum students - then snap this item up. Inside you'll find note-for-note transcriptions (courtesey of Michael Bettine) of eighteen Bruford compositions, plus accompanying technical exercises (by Bill) to improve your skills. It's worth noting that all music in this volume was written in Bill's so-called 'Winterfold' years, so don't expect to find any music Bill did after the 1980s.
The book assumes the reader to be of some competence and familiar with the fundamentals of drumming. For example, rudiments aren't explained but there are ideas on what can be done with some of them in a musical context.
It's worth noting that a couple of the scores are written with Bruford's unique drumkits in mind. Parts played on RotoToms and Simmons electronic pads can easily be substituted by tom-toms. However, 'Fracture' features percussion items that one may or may not have to hand... Useful for an ensemble that might care to play the piece though. A lead sheet for 'Beelzebub' is an impressive inclusion too.
Bruford introduces every song with a few reflections and memories relevant to each piece. His tone will be immediately familiar to those who have read The Autobiography... There are also quotations of Thoreau, Stendahl and many others. As you do.Read more ›
