Product Description

Product Description

There is a defiant air of unflinching bravery in Mirel Wagner's carefully chosen words and the skeletal chords of her acoustic guitar. Her songs are like smooth, polished pebbles, thrown into a cold bottomless pond, drops of life that set the darkness rippling.

Squeezing the last drop of life from a worn out genre, her acoustic balladry is as far as you'll get from cliched coffee house folk. It has more to do with the primeval darkness of Swans than the folksy bonhomie of Bob Dylan.

Her background couldn't be more normal: a relatively sheltered childhood in one of the better-off suburbs of Helsinki, teenage years spent rummaging around the blues section of her local library, fumbling around with her brother's acoustic guitar. She is wary of speaking of her Ethiopian origins (Wagner was adopted at 11/2 years of age) and sees herself as Finnish. Her art is all the more astonishing considering this cultural context, all the more shocking in its strangeness because it stems from something so normal.

'When The Cellar Children See The Light Of Day' was recorded at Shark Reef Studios in Hailuoto by electronic music producer Vladislav Delay (Luomo, Uusitalo). Delay fleshes out Wagner's sound, adding subtle production touches that give her songs a newfound vastness and gravity, while keeping the winning formula that garnered critical acclaim for her self-titled debut.

The new album also features Academy and Grammy award winning Scottish composer Craig Armstrong.

Format: Audio CD
This is the second album from the Ethiopian-born Finnish singer-songwriter produced by techno producer Vladislav Delay. Mirel Wagner inhabits that territory where only the bravest singers like P J Harvey, Patti Smith and Nick Cave are prepared to forage. "When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day" is a sinister title for what is a very dark album. This should not put you off exploring this record since at its best it is completely compelling and addictive to boot.

Its difficult to remember any album starting with a song quite as eerie as "1234" where Wagner questions "One, two, three, four, what's underneath the floor?". It turns out to be "Pretty little eyes, pretty little face". The song could soundtrack "True Detective" altough there is also an old and familiar ambience around it that locates it firmly in the blues tradition. This is even more pronounced with the superb "Ellipsis" which sounds like something that Neil Young could have added to "Tonight's the Night". Determining that "Oak Tree" will be the single from this album shows that Wagner is not afraid to push at the boundaries of optimism. It is another murder ballad surrounding the story of a dead child. Music OMH have argued that listening to Wagner is like imagining that "Robert crossed the Atlantic and sang Billie Holiday numbers in a grunge band". The rolling "Devils Tongue" sees Wagner pursuing a hopeless case of broken love, making similar efforts by Laura Marling sound rather tame. Finally "Taller than Tall Trees" does have echoes of the chords of "Heart of Gold", yet the vocal is pure hurt and dark emotion.

The music of Mirel Wagner is not destined to bring a smile to your face. She inhabits the same old world blues context which Jack White has effectively mainstreamed over the past decade.

sparse yet incredibly rich ... rather like simple yet breathtakingly excellent ingredients cooked with love to produce a fabulous meal free of glazes, sauces, and trimmings, just simple draw-dropping brilliance on a plate. Highly recommended. Mastering and recording values are very high, too, so a real treat in every respect.

Just voice and acoustic guitar giving the songs a stark but powerful feel to them. The subject matter of the lyrics may not be to everyones taste but the impact she's manages to achieve with her slow laconic singing style is quite astonishing. Can anyone make a beautiful song about death, well Mirel Wagner manages this feat just listen to 'Oak Tree'. Other stand out tracks are 1 2 3 4, Ellipsis, Dreamt of a Wave and What Love Looks Like. If you are looking for someone a little different that stands out from the usual pop music crowd this will be a good listen.
