I have seen this book for a long time but didn't want to read it because both the book cover and blurb put me off but I finally decided to buy it and was glad I did.
It is the story of a young woman, Destiny, who appeared to have a bright and promising future until she got entangled in two wrong relationships.
It was painful to see the consequences that ensued from the bad decisions she made. She suffered both emotional and physical abuse that could have been avoided if only she had paid attention to the glaring signs of trouble at the start of the relationships.
One also wonders why she stayed in the abusive relationship for that length of time, after-all her husband didn't physically tie her down. But I guess her self esteem had suffered so much that she could no longer think for herself.
The intense plot was lightened by the dramatic nature of her mother and that added a welcome humorous side to the story.
'When broken chords sing' was very well written. It is fast paced, interesting and there are many lessons to be learnt from it. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.
The protagonist (Destiny) reminded me of my mum. I am forever inspired by her courage and forgiving heart to those who hurt her. Iretioluwa reminded me of me, the daughter a mother who was willing to completely ignore what the 'cultural society' will say about being a single mother for the sake of her children.
Intertwined with raw emotion, humour and lessons to be learned. I'd definitely recommend this book! This book is for all the untold stories of women with those broken chords called marriages. Broken chords of hurt. "Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; touched by a loving heart, weakened by kindness, Chords that were broken will vibrate once more"
"Forgiveness is not an emotion. It is a decision. It is not about acting as if nothing happened. Its about accepting what has happened and choosing to pardon the offender... a hard choice that takes a conscious effort. "
"Forgiveness is a commandment. going back to an abuser is not."
The author manages to weave humour into a subject manner that unfortunately is a reality for too many. The Yoruba language adds to the authenticity of this book and enabled me to create a mental image of what the characters looked like.
It is only when we sink to the bottom that we have to realise the only way is up and if you are a person of faith, then understanding the power of prayer, of having hope and leaning not on your own understanding will get you far. The author does an amazing job without you feeling as though you are being preached at and I look forward to reading more of her books.
More is needed to highlight the problem of domestic violence and sexual abuse perpetrated on children.
I would have liked the author to have closure for Destiny with Toks. Toks was manipulative and evil, she went unpublished.
There was help for Destiny and there are help and hope for victims if domestic abuse, through Women's Refuge.
I will recommend this book to women who are considering marriage. Abuse is usually present during courtship, and women need to be aware and be insightful.
My only negative comment about this book is the end. Please tell me you are writing about what happened to Andrew and Destiny, also Toks story will be intriguing. Cheers and may God bless you and give you more vision to write more to the glory of God.
