This is an interesting and extremely cosmopolitan grouping of some fine jazz musicians; Australian cornetist Bob Barnard, soprano saxophonist Jim Galloway (a Scotsman based in Canada), teamed up with the Swiss trio of Henri Chaix. The album was recorded live at Baden, Switzerland in 1997.
Remarkably - for what is essentially a pair of touring horn-men working with a pick-up band - the music is beautifully warm, free-flowing and satisfying. Barnard and Galloway had worked together before and are clearly familiar with each other's playing - to the extent that they are confident in improvising around each other, sometimes with neither instrument playing lead; there are nice choruses of the horns just weaving together, ably supported by the trio. As one would expect from a live recording there are a few imperfections, but in general this is a lovely album of standards by seasoned mainstream players. There are solo spots and the trio (Chaix - piano, Isla Eckinger - Bass, Romano Cavicchiolo - drums) get to show their mettle throughout.
Barnard (to my ears anyway) stems from the Bobby Hackett school of cornet stylists (sounding like Alex Welsh on occasion) while Galloway, in the inevitable shadow of Bechet, has a light and lyric sound similar to stylists like Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern - but, it must be said, both are their own men.

This is a pleasing and relaxing album with some fine music making, excellent mainstream jazz.
the playing time runs to just under 1 hour 3 mins. Check out the sound samples on the mp3 download page.
