By The Wolf TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 20 Oct. 2013
Format: Audio CD
The work of Norwegian singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl is well worth
getting to know. There's a warmth and affability about it which can
make you feel like you're in the company of an old friend performing
just for you. These tunes work slowly on the emotions and then suddenly
you find yourself totally taken over by their subtle, guileless charms.

Mr Dybdahl's voice rides fairly high on the stave; a fragile and sometimes
fractured (in a good way) vibrato which inhabits his compositions in an
almost organic way. He gives the impression of barely ever breaking a
sweat in performances of laid-back but perfectly judged understatement.

From the deliciously sultry rhythms of opening track 'This Love Is Here To
Stay' and equally enchanting 'Running On Fumes', where one can imagine the
spirit of John Martyn smiling in the wings; through the restrained aching
melancholy of 'Shine'; the sweet-as-honey-nocturnal-shuffle of 'City Lights'
and bitter-sweet entreaties of 'But We Did' there is little not to love.

Final track, the string saturated 'This Next Wave Is A Big One' may well
be one of the most beautiful inventions ever to bless the listening world.

'What's Left Is Forever' jumps effortlessly into my top twenty albums of 2013.

Essential.

Perhaps a slightly different flavour, but pretty much what you would expect from Thomas Dybdahl, beautiful vocals, wonderful guitars/music and well-crafted songs. I will be enjoying this one for a while yet.
