Whatever it Takes is the true story of a lifelong NFL fan who always dreamt of making it into the big league in one way or another. Not everyone is made to be a player of course, and so it was for Dan Kelly. It was as a scout that his dream came true.

Kelly builds us up to that point with various childhood reminiscences about his developing love for the game, and in particular the Washington Redskins – notably a speculative call to a favourite player at the team hotel one day, garnering an invitation to meet the team before their match the next day. A lifetime memory for any sports-giddy teenage boy.

For Kelly, a troubled upbringing and early adult life was played out to the backdrop of the ever present hopes and dreams of becoming an NFL scout. In spite of life’s knock-backs, perseverance was Kelly’s watchword as he refused to let go of his dream despite the realities of a tough financial situation. One final attempt at capturing his dream saw night after night of videos of College Football, studying and analysing potential NFL draftees for a speculative report and resume. He spent his remaining cash to produce and send this report around the NFL in the hope of his dream coming true.

It was quite a commitment of course, but Kelly’s faith was absolute: “It’s going to happen.”

The most fascinating parts of the book are the ‘behind-the-scenes’ aspects which shine a light on NFL scouting and the processes involved. Naturally, there is far more to it than you might imagine, and from interview to working as a scout, the insight into that world makes for great reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Would Have Been Better If He Kept Doing What It Takes 16 Mar. 2017
By RP Hatten - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This was an interesting read...for awhile. I was hoping for a blueprint to get into scouting (which it kinda sorta offered), but the book comes apart at the end due to the writer's self destructive behavior. And we also get a good preaching to.

Fascinating book that takes you through a young fan's journey from childhood to young adulthood, as he pursues his dream of becoming an NFL Scout. However, once he realizes his dream, adversity strikes and he realizes his new calling in life. A must-read book for anyone hopeful enough to one day make it into an NFL Front Office.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Powerful True Story!!! 18 July 2016
By Paul Holway - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is an incredible book for football fans and non-football fans alike. It's a powerful true story of a man who achieved his dream job with the NFL. That's just the tip of the iceberg of Daniel's story. He has had to endure so much heartache as things kept coming against him. This book will leave you full of hope that comes from a great Savior, Jesus Christ!
