Upon reading the foreword of this book, I felt elated and empowered for the first time. My 8-year-old boy has always been 'not quite mainstream behaviour'. Enough to make life challenging, without understanding why.
Now, for the first time, I recognised my child in the description of the target audience - he isn't borderline autistic or Asbergers or some other 'label' after all - but he is extraordinarily negative about everything and broods or 'his brain gets stuck' on the bad things that happen each day (minor things, such as no croissants for breakfast!) so that his entire day is ruined.
He is an avid reader, and just drank in the information and ideas in this lovely book with no prompting from me. He has put into action the many ideas and strategies put forward. He loves this book because he can implement plans to change the things he hates about himself. It has helped him and us to understand his feelings a lot. Though not an instant cure for this extreme child, I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who just cannot see a way over life's hurdles.

My son is 9, gifted, grumbling about me buying this book and grumbling about having to read it. Even so, I have to say he was drawn into it almost immediately. The book uses really clear metaphors that are easy to go back to when confronted with a new problem. Especially loved the image of the boy who stands in front of a hurdle and shouts at it to move away. Now it's easy for me to refer to this image and tell him "don't be that boy!". The information in the book really works on several levels and gives useful tips and hints for the parents of grumblers as well. Regarding the American words in it that some parents complained about, I have to say that my son thought it was cool to read an American book for once. All in all, highly recommended.

This is the second in this series I have purchased and I would recommend them. As a professional working with children with behaviour and emotional issues this book has been in effective use for those in KS3. Better for use for the more immature in these year groups and would be well used in KS2.

This book has been really helpful to work through with my daughter. She was having some trouble dealing with her emotions and feeling a bit sorry for herself. What to do when you grumble too much was great for us to sit and work through together and it helped me realise some things about my own world view.

Great book for anyone with a young child!

Hit the nail on the head! Identified the problems, broke them down into manageable bits, good suggestions for improving the situation and kept the child interested. Recommended

Really good book using cognitive behavioural therapy techniques. Great workbook with a good balance of text and worksheets. The worry title is still my favourite in the series but this one is useful for key stage 2 and 3 children.

Delivery was very prompt and these books are full of great ideas for helping children manage difficult thoughts and feelings. I have also been able to adapt these exercises for working with slightly older kids. Very good series of books.

I tried it with my 11 year old and he found the language too young and a bit patronising. However, we did have fun with it and it did open up some areas of discussion with us. I think it should be rated for up to 8 or 9 years old.
