About the Author
Rosalind Davis is a graduate of The Royal College of Art (2005) and Chelsea College of Art (2003) Davis has exhibited nationally and internationally and has had several solo shows in London; the Bruce Castle Museum (2013), John Jones Project Space, Julian Hartnoll Gallery (2009), The Residence Gallery (2007), and The Stephen Lawrence Centre.
Annabel Tilley makes drawings currently inspired by the history of English painting and museum collections. Shortlisted for The Jerwood Drawing Prize, she has exhibited widely including at Fruehsorge Contemporary Drawing in Berlin.

I've freelanced for 30 years and taught part-time for the last five and I would thoroughly endorse pretty much every word in this book. It's going to be tough - only your obsession with your art, combined with a business sense will make you an artist, as opposed to a sunday painter. (To misquote Eduardo Paolozzi in a lecture I once heard.)
I guess if I had a favourite part it would be about using every chance you have to exhibit and get your work out there. (Chapter 3) Probably, looking back, that was one of my biggest mistakes, for a long time I missed almost all of these although as an illustrator work did get into print which helps. Now days of course social media helps in a big way if you learn to use it. The advice on writing your statements in plainish english helps is good as well. One job I do is re-writing artspeak gobbeldy gook for an arts festival catalogue, and you wouldn't believe the unaccessibility of the language often used.
If there is an issue with this book, then it's the title. Obviously I can't speak for anyone else, but most definitely I do teach the commercial stuff and try to get students interested in showing and explaining work. Sometimes it's a case of "what you didn't listen to in art school". But all in all an excellent book and well worth getting if you are serious.
Having been through an art university and having experienced first hand everything they don't teach you. It was just amazing! To find this book.
The book Is written is such a way that the authors come across as genuine, wise, funny and fearless. Written in a way that never comes across as anything other than wonderful. Theres tonnes of fabulous nuggets of supremely useful info. Great for an extended delve but also works fabulously to dip in and out of.
I've found this book to be a huge advantage in my own practice I feel as though I'm empowering my practice and not being held back by my own limitations. It's just so so good!
Absolutely essential for any artist.
