This album was originally released in 1993 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Shara is a much under rated performer whose excellent vocal delivery makes her one of the great British female singers of the 1990's. She is best known as the featured singer on the first Massive Attack album Blue Lines including the hit singles Unfinished sympathy and Safe from harm. Who can forget that video with her walking down an American street in one continous camera shot?
What Silence Knows was her debut solo album and it produced four Top 40 hits. There is great variety on this album with One Goodbye in Ten providing thought provoking lyrics and a Motown type musical arrangement, Inside Out is a gentle acoustic type ballad of tremendous quality, on Down that Road Shara's voice reminds me of Aretha Franklin and Uptight is a perfect soul pop confection which got into the top twenty in early 1994.
Shara should have been a bigger star than she was but her sound was probably too classy for the mass market and too cleanly produced for the r n b market.
If you want to hear an excellent voice buy this cd.

"Mental illness is so often mistaken for genius in pop – unless the sufferer is female, when the world queues to condemn"

Yes! not the best way to start a review.

I was trawling through the internet, as you do, and happened across an article in the Grauniad from 2011. Straight away it hooked me. I really had no idea who Shara was and TBH couldn't honestly admit to knowing Massive Attack either. But, like I say, I was hook by the article and so sought her out.

This is truly a wonderful album. Give it a try, I am sure you will agree with me.

Why this lady didn't do more solo stuff is beyond me.

She's featured a lot with Massive Attack if you like them you'll love this.

Uptight and Down that road hold loads of memories for me.

Life's good.

This music from Shara Nelson is excellent and had you not forgotten she did that amazing song of unfinished symphony with massive attack.A very under rated performer with a fabulous voice, knocks many of her contemporaries for six.,thoroughly recommend.
