Cal can't believe it, he's met a great girl who looks exactly like Nicole, the girl he loved when he was a child. Cal, Rae and Richelle were very close childhood friends. When Nicole moved into their neighborhood they welcomed her into their group immediately. They saw her as one of them, only Nicole was different because of her parents. She was never allowed to get her clothes dirty and the atmosphere at home was tense. When she was with her friends she could be herself for just a little while. Even though they've lost touch Cal thinks he knows the girl he's so fascinated by, he's sure she is Nicole, only she calls herself Nyelle. She's seems to be completely different person though, she's someone who seems to be fearless and carefree instead of shy and cautious.

Cal is afraid the girl he loves will walk out of his life for a second time. He tries desperately to hold on to her. She's daring and they go on risky dates. She keeps challenging him which sometimes leads to dangerous situations. Even though they're seeing each other quite regularly Nyelle remains a mystery. Will Cal be able to find out what happened to Nicole and will he discover who Nyelle really is?

Cal is a good guy, but when it comes to girls he doesn't let anyone come close. Girls seem to like him very much and he dates them without ever getting too serious with any of them. With Nyelle things are different. Cal has been hurt very much when two of his three close friends disappeared from his life. He's still great friends with Rae, but thinking about the past hurts, because of Richelle and Nicole. I wanted to know what happened very badly. Especially since the four children seemed to be so close and they obviously loved each other very much.

Cal Logan is very shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting in a coffee shop thousands of miles away from their hometown, especially as no one has seen or heard from her since their graduation over a year ago. But this isn’t Nicole – although she looks like Nicole, her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who Cal is. The complete opposite of Nicole, Cal finds himself quickly drawn in and fascinated by her. But Nyelle is very secretive…

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Rebecca Donovan is a completely new author to me and so I didn’t know what to expect, but this definitely will not be the last book of hers I read! I was hooked straight away by the storyline and Rebecca’s writing style, and I raced through the pages because I was so eager to find out where the story would go.

The characters were fascinating and very well-written, they were also very realistic and I think that there will be readers out there that can relate to aspects of the characters or their situations. I especially liked the mystery and intrigue surrounding Nyelle, and this was one of the main things that had me so gripped to reading the novel! Cal was a real breath of fresh air – it was fantastic to have a character like him to read about – I loved his flaws, his friendships, his personality, he was wonderful. I liked that I had no idea what way the storyline would go or where it would take me, I felt like I went on a true emotional roller-coaster with Cal and Nyelle….I have no other words other than WOW. I was very impressed with What If and I was absorbed in every minute of the novel!

What If is a powerful and compelling story that is not only full of mystery and drama but also deals with serious issues too. I was full of many emotions whilst reading this and I was surprised throughout, it really is a stunning read. What If is a story that is impossible to put down and one which I would recommend with all of my heart.

'What If' is a wonderfully captivating book which will touch your heart and make you treasure life and each and every step you take on your journey. The book's message is about living life to the full and living the life you want. This really resonated with me and made me want to be more bold and carefree and to appreciate happiness, rather than waiting for happy to come along.

A young-adult standalone from Rebecca Donovan, author of the Breathing trilogy, I have been waiting to read this book ever since I first heard about it. I now want to recommend it to everyone for the very positive message it contains, as well as for it being such a fantastic contemporary read. It made me laugh, smile and cry. It tugged at my heartstrings and had me reading long into the night.

It has an intricately layered narrative structure which took a bit of getting used to. It switches narrators and the time frame jumps backwards a lot but it was so cleverly executed that I soon found myself not taking much notice of this. Plus, the events that the story takes us back to are extremely central to the plot and the motivations and actions of the characters.

The characters themselves are warm and real and flawed and really leap off the page. There's Cal, the main narrator of the story, along with childhood friends Rae, Richelle and Nicole. I'm not always so keen on male narrators, but I grew to like Cal immediately and I think Rebecca Donovan wrote him exceptionally well. Cal is at college when he meets Nyelle Preston - a girl who looks exactly like Nicole but acts in a completely different way. Their personalities are polar opposites. I don't want to say anything else about the plot except to say that this is a story you will want to puzzle out on your own.
