Product Description

The ever-productive and always surprising career of Beach Boy legend Brian Wilson continues to dazzle old and new fans alike. His first ever solo album of Christmas music, What I Really Want For Christmas, named for its Bernie Taupin-penned title track is an uplifting collection of new songs, traditional Christmas favourites and re- workings of Beach Boys yuletide classics. In addition to "What I Really Want For Christmas," with lyrics written by Taupin (Elton John’s long-time lyricist), the new album features the newly-composed song "Christmasey," with lyrics by songwriting icon Jimmy Webb. Brian and his fantastic band bring a fresh vitality to the Beach Boys perennial favourites "Little Saint Nick" and "The Man With All the Toys," the two opening songs on 1964’s essential The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album . The album also include new versions of 8 traditional Christmas songs: "Auld Lang Syne," "Deck The Halls," "The First Noel," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," "Oh Holy Night," and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas."

Typical of Brian Wilson to follow up his classic SMiLE with the unexpected genre of a Christmas album. Taking such a safe route, I expected to hear a mawkish 1980s corporate produced sounding album but instead hear an artist who has regained his vocal abilities and confidence in his production skills. Involving his tour band with the backing vocals and instrumentation was also a very smart move after the hit and miss solo vocals of 2004's GIOMH. "What I Really Want For Christmas" approaches the high benchmark set by Phil Spector's Christmas Album and bodes well for Wilson's next sound adventure.
Rock on, Mr Wilson!!!

My love affair for Wilson's music knows no bounds, so imagine the anticipation I had for Christmas spent with the old master singing carols in my room. Given Brian Wilson's love of (his musical insipartion) Phil Spector's Christmas album, he's not unexpectedly gone and made his own. The arrangements are not his best, but still pleasent and better than most of his contemporaries. His backing band are second to none, and his voice has improved. However, outside of the big day itself this is not an album I'll probably listen to, much. This is not Wilson at his best, but shows promise. The future is definatly brightening for the returning master. Buy SMiLE, far better.
