The transition of Kathryn Brooker to Kate Gavier is more than highlighting the journey of this woman. This book is an exceptional social study and psychological study of sacrifice and survival.
This book confronts domestic violence and human subjugation head on, no frills, no fuss, just the raw cruel and seedy reality of what women endure on a daily basis. I was absolutely gripped throughout. Not one single paragraph is tiresome. This novel doesn't attempt to shock, on the contrary Kate never seeks sympathy as women who suffer this don't. Mrs Prowse tells the story for many women and indeed men.
I want the world to read this book; for many reasons. One particular reason is that I feel this book can empower and heal. I thank you Mrs Prowse for writing and knowing some the emotions that even years later I couldn't make sense out of until reading this.
A haunting novel, a story of truth, a pillow to rest upon; these are but a few things of what this book is.
On many levels this book is totally irritating and unsatisfactory. If an author must jump on the band-wagon of the abuse genre, then one would hope that they write a book which gives justice to the subject of domestic violence with proper research, including the consequences of so many years of such trauma. Although, unlike some reviewers, I have not experienced anything like this first-hand, I have gained a peripheral knowledge of the subject both through work and people I know. Kate's severe injuries were such that it would have been impossible to function on a daily basis without anyone having an inkling that something was wrong - and what midwife worth her salt would not have noticed something when Kate gave birth (twice!). Kate's children were apparently the reason she stayed - well, she should have found the courage to leave because they became totally unpleasant teenagers and adults. I know teenagers can be difficult, but these two were just plain nasty, especially the boy who treated his mother with contempt (patterns of learned behaviour?) Kate was an intelligent, educated woman with a potentially good family support system. She was quite capable of forging a career and a life for herself and her children, and surely no judge would have given the father access had he seen Kate's injuries.
As for the rest of the book!Read more ›
