Bree is a very quiet solitary person, who doesn't mix well with others. She keeps her co-workers at arms length, goes to work to complete her work and does not get involved with office gossip or socialising. She confesses to her co-workers her Father is dying - this is the 1st time they have learnt anything personal about Bree.
Bree does in fact have a side of her personality that no one would ever imagine!
She frequents a certain type of club, "enjoying" rough sex. The rougher the better. Luke who becomes her "Dom" was in fact her saviour.
Due to her past, which unfolds in the book, Bree is convinced she is less than worthless and useless to anyone. Luke sees beyond this - but how to convince Bree?
Although the story does detail rough sex and parts were quite difficult to read, I felt so much for Bree. By the end of the story the "butterfly has emerged!"
Not an easy reader but a lovely story.
As Bree's past is revealed layer by painful layer, there were so many times that story made me tear up. It was so skillfully written and darkly emotional, and at times, it felt almost like a punch to the heart. However, the author balanced all that pain and darkness with the bright hope of a true hero. And this was one special hero. Luke is forty-five, ten years older than Bree, and he is a natural caregiver. And he is the one man who takes the temporary physical connection of sex into something more. With Bree, he wants every part of her, especially those secretive parts she withholds from him. He'll accept nothing less than all of her.
There is the dominance play between them, what with Bree's need to be punished and controlled; there is the rough sex role play, bondage, voyeurism and exhibitionism, public sex, some spanking, and whole lot of sex words some readers may not easily handle. If you do like to read rough sex, you know what I'm talking about. Words and phrases like f'ing little wh0re and dirty b*tch. Really harsh words, but sexy words if you're given to that. And Bree needs those very words deliverd "in a voice that drowned out the other times, bad times, when men had called her a slut and worse."
There's so much to say about Luke: strong, sexy, dominating, protective and possessive, but most of all, he is love and safety for Bree, everything she has ever wanted and needed, all in one person. For all the rough sex and the harsh, diry sex words that Bree needs and craves from him, Luke also gives her words that are just as powerfully emotional but also tender and sweet. "I want you, I need you, I have to have you. You're mine," he tells her. Luke enjoys the hot, rough, and dominating sex, but he soons wants that and much more from Bree.
There's a lot going on in this story. Many times it goes beyond bdsm erotic romance and into something much deeper and darker. With this heroine, so completely damaged and emotionally scarred, it was almost difficult at times to read and to accept her story. Whether you fully understand her need for pain and punishment, you will feel sympathy for her. You will want her to find that very thing she's desperately looking for. This is a story about learning to trust, letting go of fear and pain and guilt, and accepting a love as it's freely and truly given to you, a love that heals all. Bree didn't want to depend on a man, as she felt all a man could ever do is hurt her and abandon her. But not Luke. He brings her out of the dark. It's an emotional story, at times dark and disturbing and sad. A deep read that satisfies on many levels.
