Sheila O’Flanagan has a long list of best sellers to her name and, I should imagine, an army of loyal readers. So this review is addressed to people like me who have not read her before.

When I started reading I thought the book was falling very nicely into that genre of Dublin based romcom writers – perhaps not the best, like Marion Keyes, but all right. Lola, a country girl on the make in Dublin, ambitious for a good career, gets pregnant. So far, so much the same as many similar books, but then it starts to veer away from the pattern. Instead of being dumped by the callous, rich boyfriend, jeweller Philip Warren, she dumps him and decides to go it alone. She fears that contact with Philip and his family would not be straightforward and is fearful of being indebted to them. In this she is correct and the limited contact between her daughter Bey and the Warren family is disastrous. But genes will out and Bey is fascinated by jewellery and trains as a jeweller. At this point you might think you could complete the story yourself, but you would be wrong. Bey is her mother’s daughter and a modern woman – not for her the conventional happy ever after.

I enjoyed this book when I wasn’t really expecting to. It is not the conventional romcom. The heroine genuinely is not dependent on a man (unlike most of her romcom contemporaries who might shout about independence and feminism but fall into the hero's arms with remarkable ease) and lives life on her own terms. I hope this is an indication of where the top end of the romcom genre is heading.

I shall be looking out for more books by Sheila O’Flanagan.

I thoughts this would be a light and fluffy rom/com chick lit read.
It is much much more than that, I read this book in two sittings and found it quite unputdownable. I was sad to finish it and it kept me riveted until the final page.

Then - Lola is an ambitious young girl who hopes to make something of her life in Dublin. Then the same old story she meets a wealthy man and falls pregnant, here the stereotype falls away, Lola decides to dump him, she wants nothing to do with him or his money or his wealthy family. There is a lot more to Lola than you think. She decides to things her way on her own and on her own terms. Whilst Lola wants nothing to do with Philip she wants them to have nothing to do with her daughter Bey either. The little contact that they do have has the most awful consequences.

Fast forward to the present day and Bey decides she wants to train to be a jeweller the same as her biological father, and she wants answers about her childhood and why her mother was forced to make the decisions she did.

A really fabulous read and I adored it was a revelation and I am going to look for more by this talented author. Recommend.

I was not sure what to expect from this book as in the past I have read a couple of great books by Sheila O'Flanagan which were really enjoyable but the last one I read I really didn't like at all. I thought I would give this new one a try and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the main characters they were really strong women although they did not seem to think they were. Lola the mother and Bey her daughter. Not wishing to tell you what it is all about or spoil the plot I am sure you will enjoy reading this one. I could not put it down and enjoyed waiting to see what happened next and indeed right at the very end. I was not disappointed at all and I would highly recommend this book as one to take on your holidays and enjoy,.
