Fascinating read - Fantastic! - Matthew Wright from The Wright Stuff (Channel 5) --Channel 5 The Wright Stuff

From the Publisher

What on Earth Publishing is a new, small company with a big mission: to integrate the major themes of science and history and make them accessible to the largest number of people possible. We want to do this because we believe passionately that a healthy future for life on the Earth ultimately depends on people having a broader perspective on the past.

Producing the What on Earth? Wallbook is our first attempt at fulfilling that dream. It tells the extraordinary story of our planet on a single timeline and puts human history into context alongside other living things and the history of the Earth itself.

This is history let out of its box. It simply sings to info-philes and visual learners alike. With parallel timelines for all continents, developments on land, sky and sea, more than a thousand illustrations, it is a superlative mastery of design and research, a treat to eye and brain alike.

Why couldn't history lessons at school be like this? Our whole family were glued to it from the moment we opened the package:"Mummy look a dinosaur, an Egyptian, a rocket, a Roman, a Viking boat... Daddy look we came from monkeys..." my five-year-old squealed, having just discovered evolution! My husband has demanded we put it up on our stairs so he can read it each time he walks past, but I might have it beside my bed for the first couple of weeks so I can read its 7000 word essay on the back. Incredible, rich, contextual history education for all the family - a wonderful gift for your family, friends, local school or library, and a must for home educators. In my view, this is education as it should be.

I've got a house full of books, mostly unread, and seem to have got out of the habit of reading much these days. When I find myself in a bookshop, even if I find a book that looks interesting I think about the unread books in my house and return the book to the shelf. That's not what happened when I opened THIS book!

If it looks really good on the outside - and it does - it gets better when you open it up. Half as big again as A4 you open it to find it's one long page, folded concertina-like between the covers. You therefore have the choice of dipping into it, sitting down to study it in fascination for hours, or opening it out to make a LONG wall poster and sticking it up on your wall. Which presumably is why they call it a Wallbook!

One side of the LONG poster gives you information in text form; the other side gives you a hand-drawn depiction of the history of the planet Earth and its people - you can marvel at pre-human history or gawk at different stages of human civilisation, seeing what was happening in different parts of the planet at the same time. Of course it's great for kids, maybe 9 or 10 upwards - AND it's also great for adults like me who haven't got a clue about history and want to know more.

The book's GREAT. I've just bought one for me and two for presents for friends. And no - I don't know the authors or publisher personally!

The book is technically a giant time line from the big bang to the present day.

Christopher Lloyd came into my school and talked about the past , he is really inspiring.

Nothing would stop me from buying this book!

I was so amazed by his speech about history he made it fun.

I had bought a similar item: the What on Earth book before in a bigger size. I offered it to a boy for his 6th birthday and it was fabulous. a very good buy. Its size was a bit big but that was perfect. I tried the smaller size to see and i ordered 4 as i know many 6year old children who needed a good quality educational gift for their birthdays. I was shocked at how bad the design was. This book is fantastic but even though a sort of magnifying glass ( made of plastic) was provided, it is impossible to really see the letters as the font is way too small. there is absolutely no point in making such a small edition of this book. one needs to be able to see everything ( drawings and descriptive captions) and this is not fit for purpose. So please, don't waste time buying this and just order the big size. the book is not much more expensive. one will spend 11 pounds instead of 7 pounds but at least, the children will be able to read the book. i just can't believe someone thought it was a good idea to make it that small.
otherwise, if you put the format issue aside, this is a great book.

I bought this for my to nephews, 6 and 8. The older one was heavily into geology and dinosaurs at the time, but after a perfunctory look, didn't seem terribly interested. The younger one did at least sit still long enough for me to walk him through it, but wasn't inspired.

I'm not sure why as it seems quite good. I think it's perhaps a bit too densely packed with information and difficult to read.

My three year old grandson can now see how the big bang, the dinosaurs, the meteor that killed them and the ascent of man all happened. It is one of his favourite books and probably will be for some years. Wish I had a wall big enough to display it as a poster.

We have this on our wall. It's ace. I was concerned that it wouldn't stick to the wall with the weight of it but it has instructions on the back for where to put your blue tack and it works. As for the content, it starts with the big bang and goes right up to Obama which I think is fab. We are not really 'big bang believers' but it is still good because I think kids need to know what other people believe and I just let my kids make up their own minds.
