About the Author

Jackie Bouchard, a USA Today bestselling author, writes what she calls Fido-friendly fiction – humorous and heart-warming stories about women and the dogs that profoundly impact their lives. She spent a long time as a creative soul trapped in the body of a practical person. When she was bitten by the writing bug, she managed to leap free of the hamster wheel of corporate America, and now spends her days walking her dog, talking to her dog, and listening for the voices in her head that want their stories told. When the voices don’t talk to her, she can often be found staring into the refrigerator. After growing up in Southern California, Jackie moved to Bermuda, where she met her husband. Now back in San Diego, American Jackie, her Canadian hubby, and her Mexican rescue mutt form their own happy little United Nations. Jackie’s novels include HOUSE TRAINED (Lake Union, Oct. 2015), RESCUE ME, MAYBE, and WHAT THE DOG ATE. I have just finished What The Dog Ate by Jackie Bouchard and it was bloody fantastic. I recently read her other book for the first time Rescue Me, Maybe which was a very different experience because although I enjoyed reading it, at times I felt I didn't relate to the main character at all (but that's a whole other review). Anyway I enjoyed that book so downloaded this one once payday had arrived and I loved it. I didn't want it to end and as I finished the last chapter my first thought was I hope she writes a follow-up. The story is built around Maggie (and of course Kona her wonderful dog), you follow her story as she rebuilds her life after her significant other "does the dirty". There were moments when I was howling with laughter with tears rolling down my face at some of the exploits that follow. This was one of the funniest, uplifting books I've read in a while and I can't recommend it highly enough, Buy it you won't regret it.

Maggie is blindsided by her husband's request for a divorce. She keeps Kona, the chocolate lab, and her life falls apart. She struggles to redefine herself with the help of her brother, her friends, and Kona.
I enjoyed reading this. I found Maggie a little obsessive, but I've known some pretty obsessive people. I liked the humor and the colorful language. I even forgave her for letting her dog lick her dishes. Yes, the ending was predictable, but it was fun getting there.
One of the more colorful sentences: "The woman had a face only money could buy: porcelain forehead, eternally surprised eyebrows, and oddly elongated upper lip. Ohmygod, she's been Youth-anized."
I look forward to reading more by this author.

What's not to like about this fun and funny beachy read?! Except maybe that it's too short... New author Jackie Bouchard has come up with a feel-good little romantic comedy that speaks to us all. Life is Change, and Change is Scary, but Scary becomes the hurdle to jump over in order to find yourself at the front of the pack.

My only complaint: (small spoiler) Maggie and her new love didn't spend nearly enough intimate time together and I would've enjoyed just one more chapter filling in the blanks. The ending felt a little rushed and Ms Bouchard has the talent to take her time.

This is an easy, light read, with touches of humour and a dog. Maggie is devastated when her husband abandons her for another woman, a not uncommon scenario, but what was different about this story was the author's brilliant use of the dog in the story. Maggie decides to to make choices based on what her dog would choose. It was a clever tool.
