About the Author

Ed James writes crime-fiction novels. What Doesn’t Kill You is the third novel in his latest series, set on the gritty streets of east London and featuring DI Simon Fenchurch. His Scott Cullen series features a young Edinburgh detective constable investigating crimes from the bottom rung of the career ladder he’s desperate to climb. Set four hundred miles south on the streets of East London, his DI Simon Fenchurch trilogy features a detective with little to lose, fighting to uncover the conspiracy that tore his family apart. Formerly an IT manager, Ed began writing on planes, trains and automobiles to fill his weekly commute to London. He now writes full-time and lives in East Lothian, Scotland, with his girlfriend and a menagerie of rescued animals.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of What Doesn't Kill You, the third novel in the DI Simon Fenchurch.

The novel opens with Fenchurch and his sidekick DS Kay Reed attending, in an advisory capacity, a debate about a new web based taxi service called Travis and saving one of the debaters, Lord Gilbert Ingham, from a knife attack. They do not have time to hang about as they have to go and investigate a murder where a young professional woman has been stabbed and dumped on a building site. That's the first two chapters and the action and intrigue don't let up until the last page.

What a read. I started and couldn't put it down until I'd finished and now I'm in withdrawal. It is difficult to discuss the plot without spoilers but Fenchurch takes a major step forward in his hunt for his daughter Chloe who was kidnapped 11 years previously and along the way there is a high body count, plenty of action and a storyline filled with twists and turns. If you are looking for a high octane read this is the book for you.

Simon Fenchurch is a driven man. He is desperate to find Chloe but he no longer broods over it as he did in previous novels. I think he is well drawn because Mr James does a sterling job of conveying his desperation, panic and sense of helplessness when things don't go his way and his determination to get the information he needs. He is a bit unhinged and violent in this novel but it makes him all the more human.

What Doesn't Kill You is an excellent thriller - I won't say procedural because Fenchurch has ripped up the rule book - and I have no hesitation in recommending it as such.

I really looked forward to this, pre-ordered as usual. A whirlwind of a book, drags you on so you can't put it down, and I didn't. Enough twists and turns to throw you off the scent, and if you do see one coming it's followed closely by another that you didn't expect. The subject matter gives you the creeps, but it's completely believable.

I thoroughly recommend all Ed James' books - and there's plenty to choose from *thumbs up*

I just couldn't wait for this book to be published and I was not at all disappointed. Many twists and turns and never expected the end. I would love to hear more about DI Fenchurch and his family and how his family life pans out as well as the gritty stories. Hope for more in this series.

A dark, dark storyline, but kept me guessing till the end. Glad that there was closure 're Fenchchurch's daughter, but so many twists and turns. If bringing him back as a character in future, Ed, please give his guts a break!😉

Having read all of Ed James' books to date, I was really looking forward to his new DI Fenchurch book and it doesn't disappoint.

Just when you think he can't hit as hard with his previous book "Hunted" featuring DC Hunter then this books knocks your for six but in a different way. Still well up when I think about it!!

DI Fenchurch back with a bang and can't wait for book 4 to see what happens next.

The darkest side of criminal activity dealt with by DI Fenchurch. Ed seems to have an insiders knowledge of London and tracks Simon Fenchurch through the dreary badlands. More twists and tailbacks than a big dipper makes this the best Fenchurch so far for me. Thanks Ed.

I was fortunate enough to be allowed to pre-read this book. It certainly didn't disappoint! The third book in the DI Fenchurch series just goes to show how Ed's writing goes from strength to strength. the book follows on from it's predecessors and has the consistent back story of Fenchurch's missing daughter. The stories all all well written and flawlessly integrated. I don't want to give any plot spoilers, suffice to say this book sends the reader on an emotional rollercoaster, which makes it difficult to put down. It is so well written, you can almost smell the burrito's which Fenchurch loves so much!

No disappointments in the third Simon Fenchurch novel which builds nicely on it's predecessors and sets a fast and suspenseful pace which it maintains to the end. It's been a while since I read a book which I couldn't put down but I pretty much did a night shift to finish this one. I have read and enjoyed all of Ed's books and eagerly await his next release.
