John Terraine is widely regarded as the greatest WW1 historian of all (although some may suggest that the late Richard Holmes runs him a close second). This book is a collection of nine essays, written mostly in the late fifties, then revised and published as a single volume in 1964.

They deal with major issues such as whether the Western Front was inevitable, why the Battle of the Guise is the key to understanding why the Western Front ended up where it did, why and how Loyd George attempted to undermine Haig in 1917, and how misguided devotion to Napoleon and his tactics by the French in 1914 proved so disasterous.

At every turn we find him willing to look afresh and, if necessary, challenge myths. Terraine was possibly the first serious historian to suggest that Haig was not just an adequate general who saw victory only in bloodbaths, but, when circumstances allowed (particularly in 1918,) a brilliant one.

So many books deal with the minutiae of WW1, or with a particular battle, but I haven't come across another that deals so well with such a broad sweep, politics and stategy, and with such insight. Fifty years after it was written this is still a book that every serious historian and student of WW1 needs to have on their shelf.

I appreciate the book but he subject is horrendous, it was a time of Industrialisation whereby the means to transport large numbers of men and massive rescources in materiasl were supplied almost exclusively on a network of steel rails and steam engines. So it followed that the kind of manoeveres conducted by using the horse were now rendered to be utterly obsolete without any obvious replacement. The half trained conscript Armies of Germany England France and Belgium were locked in a deadly blood soaked embrace with no way out beyond conducting suicidal frontal assaults using these poorly trained recruits as cannon fodder. These men were openly arrayed as flesh and blood targets exposing themseves aganst modern weapons directly fed by the steel rails from the huge munitions factories. Read what came about and how this deadlock was finally countered and wasted it was a phyrric Victory which created a botched Armistice that 20 years later led on to an even more bloody war.......
