You then boot from the new drive and voilà! The same environment but at a (very) different speed.
In depth reviews are readily available elsewhere, but I don't need geeky numbers to say that this drive has breathed new life into an ageing computer.
My computer has been reborn!
The only down side is that disc noise is more noticeable during reading/writing, but I can live with it for the speed boost.
I would recommend installing the OS clean from DVD and migrating everything else across afterwards, rather than cloning from another system disc.
I was down to my last 3Gb on my system drive so I was purchasing this 300Gb as a replacement system drive. Using Acronis software cloning facility the change over was very simple and seemless. When I booted up for the first time the first thing I noticed was how quiet the new drive was compared to the older one (18 months old?!)I can now actually hear the cooling fan :o) Not only that but bootup seemed a bit quicker and smoother! All in all, I am very impressed. Highly recommended
Having said that, this is stil very good and still just about faster than more modern, larger, fast drives - just not the good value it once was!
Western Digital has used the smaller 2.5in size of drive to reduce overall platter size and the read/write head movement required and thus increase the access speed. The drive itself is slightly taller than a normal 2.5in laptop hard disk though (so you can't fit it into a netbook or typical laptop). Due to the increased heat generated by the 10,000rpm motor, the disk is fitted into a 3.5in heat sink casing to provide sufficient cooling.
The heat sink casing really benefitted from my front intake fans on my Antec 300 reducing its temperature from an idle temp of high 30's to low 30's.
While the VelociRaptor is a very fast hard disk, and grants obvious performance benefits over other hard disk drives, however don't expect it to match the near-instant responsiveness and feeling of using an SSD as a boot disk. However in comparison to other hard disks such as the WD caviar black I used to have it is about 10% faster in everyday use. They are also a lot quieter than their predecessors and use a newer sata interface to boost speeds.
A Raptor will be my first choice for a while to come yet until SSD's fall in price, increase in capacity and issues such as trim support and longevity are properly resolved.
Western Digital also provide some nice software tools on their website including Acronis which makes replacing a system disk far less painful. You literally use the software to clone your old drive to this one and then change the new drive to your boot drive and your done!

Great performing disc but the WD free cloning software would not recognise WD disc so had to spend more money to get the job done.Published on 24 Aug. 2010 by Amazon Customer
Excellent product, fitted and running Win 7 in under 30mins...
Very fast, quiet drive. I like that WD quote the actual formatted drive capacity (300Gb rather than 320GB)...
