Backup software you'll really use – five great reasons to love it
1. It's easy - Data backup can be a chore, but it's your family photos, your movies, your music - your life - and it's important to protect it. So we made WD SmartWare extra easy because we really want you to use it.

2. You can see your life safe in one place - See your content displayed in easy to understand categories like movies and photos. Watch the progress of your backup as it happens with the instant-feedback colour bars - now you can truly be sure that all your stuff is backed up. A unique visual interface lets you see the drives connected to your computer, and WD SmartWare will automatically scan your computer and find all of your personal files, including e-mail.

Content category gauges show how much information you have to be backed up in each category, and you can even mouse over a category to see a file count. Clicking 'Run Backup' will automatically start WD SmartWare backing up your files, with the category gauges changing colour during the process to show you the backup as it happens. When finished, you'll see a status screen and information about your backup. You only have to do this once - after the first backup your files will be backed up automatically every time you change or add a file.

3. It's always on the job - WD SmartWare is always watching your computer, so when you change a file and save it, create new files, add new pictures, movies, or songs, WD SmartWare will instantly back them up.

4. You can bring back lost files effortlessly - If you ever accidentally delete an important file, or need to get an earlier version of a file, you can find and retrieve it in seconds with this easy-to-use interface. You can restore files and folders by categories (such as photos, music and video), find a lost file with the search function or go back in time to retrieve an older version of a file.

5. You're in control - WD SmartWare software is also a control centre for your external drives. From it you can customise your backup, set drive security, run diagnostics, manage the power settings and more.

Ok, so having been looking around vigorously at external hard drives for some years now, and have purchased a range of different drives, I have settled with the opinion that WD has been the most reliable for me and what I use them for (photography work, some videography and 5 years of back-ups).

So I've been looking at the My Passport 500gb USB 2.0 drive for my partner as she is just starting out in photography at university and needs to back up all her work, then her HD on her MacBook went down mid December 2010 when she over cooked the drives. So I said enough is enough, its time we got you a back-up drive! (After getting her internal drive replaced by Apple as her MacBook is under warranty)

Obviously being my girlfriend, somehow, she had an atheistic preference when it came to external storage!! So I was abit unsure about showing her some of the bulky and rather ugly enclosures and drives with flashing lights that live under my desk surrounded by boards of surge protection ;) , and I showed her this rather "cute" WD (western digital) My Passport 500GB USB2.0 in blue, and it was a winner!

The drive arrived in very quick time, I ordered it on the 21st December and it was here the 22nd December! Talk about calling it fine! But luckily Amazon prime didn't let me down, thank you Amazon! The drive was well packaged, and in full working order when it was taken out of the box.

She opened it Christmas day and was very happy with the item, (she knew it was coming!) unfortunately I had a job come in boxing day and I had to use her brand new HD to back up some files! (I did feel bad about doing it, but as we all know, work is money, and Christmas is tight!) But now I have removed all my data and given it a nice clean format for her to use.

I have bought this harddrive for backup purposes with my new laptop as i didnt want to lose any data.

The pros: out of the 500gb that is advertised about 475 gb is availible due to formatting. I mainly use mine to back up my user folder and create system images.
The transfer speed is fair-it takes about an hour and a half , give or take to write 90gb to it, assuming the hdd and the internal hdd are defragged and no other processes running.

the reading speed isnt bad at all , peaking at about 57mb per second for me with an average read of 36mb/s average write about 21mb/s but it goes up significantly(29-30) if copying large files (e.g. 4 hour hd video clip).

It is very portable and has a usb connection so you can connect it to pretty much anything.
the good bit is that it draws power straight from the usb port, so no other cables to worry about.

The cons:
the automatic backup is a joke! it worked for a month, and then this WD automatic back up proudly says that all files have been backed up, oblivious of the fact that i have just trasferred over 120gb onto my laptop....
After a restart it seems to recognise it but it takes ages to back it up.

I have given up on this automatic update and now stick with the following: just copy the user folder to the harddrive. provided you save all your stuff there that backs that up nicely. Then create a system image of the entire harddrive if you can. if something goes wrong you can revert back with a windows repair disk (assuming you use windows).

CAUTION!!!: the drive supports encryption so that your data is secure. However that proves to be pain if your computer crashes and your precious system image is encrypted- luckily i had another computer to cancel the encryption.

Not convinced the colour is as shown in the picture and would have gone for silver if i could switch it, but functionality wise i have got what i expected. it is so much better not having to have a mains power source in addition to plugging it into the computer.

this external disk was cheaper than others when i bought it which was the main reason for choosing it. everything works fine and is very fast, (30mb/second average), faster than a 320gb transend i also own. it also has programs of WD inside, which optimize your disk with your pc. the only problem is that sometimes when you move it, it disconnects and this is a minus when you want to transfer a lot of data, if it disconnects there is a risk the data you already copied to be corrupted. for me it was a very cheap 500gb external disk and an overall good purchase

I am still amazed at how small in size yet big in capacity is this hard drive.
It is silent and so light that you can carry it in your pocket without even noticing it and the price is a bargain.

What I didn't like about it is the software it comes pre-installed which may be useful for Windows users since it secures and encrypts your data although if you have a Mac people recommend to use Time Machine instead (I've tried both and I'm definitely sticking with Time Machine).

I have absolutely no complaints. This drive is superb. I use it at work and it comes with software which allows you to password protect your data which is also what I was after. I have a few WD drives and so far only one has let me down. The drive also looks good, is small enough to fit into a small case which I have also purchased and I definitely recommend it. The only down side is the capacity although WD are making larger capacity drives and the prices are coming down. For the same sort of price you could got for a nice Seagate drive but it is now powered with a USB cable so it depends on what you are after. I'm happy with mine.
