Outstanding hard drive

I love this hard disk and do not regret buying it at all. At the time I bought it there weren't smaller 2TB hard drives and although I wasn't a fan of the size of it, I am happy with how it works. I've had an issue with it once where I had to reformat it and because all of my data and life is on it I was scared it could turn into a huge problem, but thankfully managed to salvage all and just had to reformat to a different type of formatting.

FAILED

My "Western Digital Elements 2 TB External Desktop Hard Drive (USB 2.0, Black)" lasted for exactly one year before failing for no obvious reason. During that time it ran cool and almost silently but that's no compensation for failure after only 12 months. Next time I'll go for noisy but reliable.

It was working OK then suddenly my computer popped up a warning that the drive had dismounted itself. Now the LEd flashes and the disc can be heard spinning but none of my computers can mount it. This fact makes data recovery impossible. I tried putting the Hard Drive unit into a caddy but the result was no different.

I've tried the returns procedure but nothing appears in the list for eligibility for return. So much for the 2 year warranty!

I'll buy another drive and use the enclosure. But it won't be a Western Digital. This is the second WD drive that's failed in the last two years.

Well, I bought this drive just under 2 years ago. I had switched back to Western Digital after I had a Seagate external drive get the dreaded 'click of death'. I've previously had a good experience with another model of Western Digital drive (which I believe is no longer available) so I was swayed back to them.

It's large space and fairly reasonable price was attractive. The previous hard drive from Seagate that failed on me had been used fairly extensively and failed after a year. After being told that you should try to limit read/write cycles on external HDDs, I bought another internal HDD for my computer. The idea behind this being that everything would go on the internal HDD and then after a while, if I knew I was keeping it (for example photos from the digital camera) I would manually copy them across to the hard drive (rather than setting automatic daily backups as I had done with the external Seagate drive).

Alas, this preventative measure only seemed to enhance the lifecycle of my latest external HDD by a mere few months. After around 20ish months this WD external hard drive has failed on me, with the dreaded 'click of death'. No warning, nothing. One second its working, next second its dead. Compared to other external HDDs I've had this wasn't used a great deal. However, for the second time in nearly as many years I'm faced with losing all the data on yet another external HDD.

The curious warning behind 'too many read/write cycles' is perplexing to me. Maybe this does increase the chance (and I stress chance) of failure - but this reason seems odd to me as my two remaining external harddrives (one WD, one Seagate) have been used for 4 and 8 years respectively) with much more demand placed on them. These are both hooked up to computers that are backing up files several times a day.

I guess they don't make them like they used to! Would have been a 4 star review had it not been for its untimely death! Disappointed. Especially from a company like Western Digital.

Very quiet hard drive...

I bought the product few months ago. WD products are really generally very good, I owned couple of WD 2.5 USB portable 1TB drive which I filled them up and needed a larger capacity drive for regular backups. The main reason is it is very very quiet.
The product comes with an external power cable.
So far so good with the product.

I purchased this drive just over 30 days ago.
Worked well for the first week. Quite as a mouse and appeared to be just the hard drive, no software to install and nothing to worry about, plug and play!
I formatted it as NTFS (Quick format).

However over the past 2 weeks the drive started playing up with corruption to the NTFS master table.
I managed to off load my data to other drives I have, unfortunately I can no longer format the drive so I have asked Amazon for a refund for now.

I orderd this 2TB HD 15th Feb 2011, told to expect delivery between 19 to 22 Feb, it arrived on the 18th Feb. Fantastic service yet again from Amazon and their associates. The HD is used to store my movies on as I always like to back them up, you never know. For this I had to format it to FAT32, well worth the wait it took as it is far easier to access them. The drive is near silent. I am sure when I put my ear to it I can hear something...
I would not hesitate to order another if I needed one. I expect that will be some time away yet.

They probably don't even make these anymore. I had 2 of these and one of them, the connection board failed. So I dismantled them and put them in another drive housing and they still work great!

Bought a couple of these drives the first worked fine, but the second one died as soon as I started to load files onto it. Contacted Western Digital who put a place holder on my bank account until I could copy the files to the new drive they sent out and return the old one. Quite good they sent me a replacement drive which was a My Book Essential which at the time was £40 more.

I definitely recommend WD Drives and even though I had a problem with this WD were very good.
