Slightly noisy and died after a year!

I bought this as an external backup device so that I could not only backup the data from my main drive but also use it as additional storage for a bunch of stuff I didn’t have room for elsewhere.

Initially I was very happy with this device. It seemed fast and transfer speeds were pretty good and it had enough storage for my needs. It was a bit noisy though. I could here it every time it started up and you can hear the clickity click of the mechanical drive within it.

I’ve given it a low score because it just didn’t last. A little over a year after purchase it gave up the ghost. It would power on but the drive wouldn’t mount. I tried everything to fix it but it wouldn’t work. I ended up losing data and chucking this in the bin.

Much better drives out there now.

I have Windows 98 2nd edition. I went to the WD web site and downloaded the driver, double clicked on it and it was up and running. I've put everything I've ever done, mountains of photos,
large hillsides of written work, !! PLUS !!, backed up my entire hard disc. I still have 232 Gb left. It hasn't scratched the surface. Runs quietly and only gets slightly warm even over several hours. The safe closing down icon is a nice touch. I've pluged it into one of my family's PC because they have broadband and downloaded the equivalent of around 20 bibles in approx' 37 minutes. No problem, no hassle, simply quiet and efficient recording. For those of you who have Windows 98 I put in a PCI card with 4 USB 2's and this drive works perfectly and runs very fast. The portability is wonderful and, as long as you use the safe shutdown icon and common sense, very safe. For the money it really has to be the best value hardware I've ever bought.

I take and store loads of photos - I can take anything up to 600 in one day so mass storage is essential for me and this meets the bill perfectly.
I already have 3 Iomega 250gb and 2 Western Digital 120gb drives and this new WD drive is a great improvement upon its earlier predecessors. Using the supplied mount it can be used vertically so takes up less space, its running temperature is considerably lower and, best of all, this newer model even has an On-Off switch.
I couldn't ask for more and will shortly be ordering another!
Buy with confidence - it's a great deal and comes with a 2 year warranty.

I purchased this item as I had been warned that the hard drive on my computer is about to go pear shaped, not wanting to lose all my precious files I needed some way to back them up.
I had looked into other methods, ghosting programs etc, but being a computer dummy it all sounded a bit too complicated for me! After reading the reviews on Amazons site, I was impressed with this product and I have not been disappointed! Delivered within 2 days as always. Took it out of the box, fitted the stands, plugged it in, no drivers to install, copied files, job done! Easy! Quick, Silent, Good Looking, Excellent Value.

I bought this drive late last year. The first one simply would not power up. Amazon wee great on the return and sent a new one immediately. Alas, here I am 8 months later writing a negative review because that is how long the second one has lasted. The only difference being that this one now contains (contained ?) 8 months of data, norton ghosts, my kids pictures, etc etc.

if you read this and still buy one...don't say you haven't been warned.

Ignore the review about the 'Awfull noise'. this review put me off buying the drive but i decided to gamble and it did pay off. The misleading review about loud noise is not true (maybe the drive was broke/defective); in fact mine is quieter than my maxtor external (if not a little slower; but you get what you pay for); THIS IS A QUIET DRIVE! the WD 250gb was 60 quid cheaper than the maxtor that i bought at xmas and for the same storage space i dont really care. for the money this is a very good drive, but the 2mb buffer makes it a lil slow at transfering; but the drives with a 8~16mb buffer are atleast 40 quid more.. id rather keep the 40 quid and get a slower drive; the overall capacity is the same. Motto of the story is you get what you pay for; but at this price it is a VERY good deal & a very good drive.

I bought my drive back in October - worked a treat, until this morning - the device has died - which is irritating beyond belief. I now wish I'd delayed my purchase until I'd seen more customer feedback! :(
FWIW I'd been using it as a *temporary* backup device while saving-up for a DVD writer - which I now need to buy urgently!
I advise you all:
- don't buy one of these drives
- if you value your data at all, then you must buy a DVD writer, make *regular* backups and double-check your DVD backups by reading them to make sure they're OK!

Bought this £30 cheaper than high street price, thanks Amazon!
I had a major system failure 2 months ago and lost just about everything that had I had not backed up on CD. I wish I had bought this earlier, I now use it with Norton Ghost and I now have a superb back up system in place just in case disaster strikes again.
Installed within seconds onto Windows XP Home system, a quick re-format to NFTS, silent running, you only know it's there because the 'on' green light is lit, fantastic product.
Buy this now at this superb price.
