I am a graphic designer so natuarally I produce a lot of work. I currently use a iMac G5 with 250gb hard disk space but it is hardly enough as I have a habit of saving everything. I also wanted a external hard drive for backing up files incase the worst should happen.

I, like yourself, read the reviews from others for this item and read ones for other hard drives. I reviewed many other hard drives some with more space i.e. 500GB and some with less, the prices varied but their reviews were less than convincing. If I am correct, the Western Digital 320GB still retains its 5 star rating. This is telling you something!

When received, I connected the cables and pluged into my iMac and immediately, the device appeared on my desktop- easy easy easy.

Although the Western states 320GB it is in actual fact about 300GB, because of pre-loaded software but obviously this is the same with all of them.

If you also have a laptop like myself, you could connect both computers to the Western Hard drive at the same time so sharing the hard drive, you will need a peripheral switch (available from PC World at 24.99) and a couple of USB cables (available from tescos at 2.47each). This means if you want a file from the other computer, you go into the hard drive and drag it out. So less messing around.

Although connected to the computer(s) it doesnt make noise, only when you upload or download from it and then slight noise. It is slim and can go anywhere, looks quite good too.

I will buy another one of these when I need one, how can you improve on perfection? You cant!

What we have here is a really cheap cost per Gb, external, fast hard drive. Approximately this costs around £3 per Gb which is reasonable.

Opening the box and plugging it in is a fairly quick task. The box contains the drive (less weight than a bag of sugar), the power supply (very light) and a two prong plug. The package is therefore very light and portable, having to find a plug socket was one compromise I opted to take given the speed of the drive was so much higher than those which are USB powered. Took me around 5 minutes all in. Windows XP recognised the device without any other intervention and I was presented a new drive letter to drop data into.

I hit a small snag which was unrelated to the device. This is the first device I had used which really really needs full speed USB 2.0. I hadn't realised but I had not enabled USB 2.0 support for my motherboard. So my transfer speeds initially to the drive were disappointing.

Once I changed my BIOS settings to enable USB 2.0 transfer speeds, the drive was impressively quick. I copied a 30Mb file over and had to double check it had copied because the little copy progress window which appears was only shown for the briefest of moments. I then tried a 4Gb file, I think it took about 4 minutes approximately.

The drive itself has little rubber feet below it when you vertically stack it (like a book, hence the marketing angle). It is fairly quiet in use and doesn't warm up too much when it's under pressure.

I use my drive as a backup device to keep a copy of the PC's data. It fills this role very nicely, however I would also consider using it as a drive to install and run software from. I haven't tried this yet, however I cannot see a reason this would not suit.

This drive has been running now for around five months on my PC. It works OK straight out of the box, but it is worth the time reformatting it as NTFS if you have XP. I was surprised how quiet is was - I don't even notice it's there. Despite being dropped twice it still works fine. I've almost filled it with photos and video and it's time to look for a new drive - I'd definitely buy another one of these.

I've had this hard drive for about 3 months and it works like a charm. Automatic on & off function is perfect for a hardcore user as you don't have to disconnect the drive manually. I've found it to be more quiet than most of the other brands as well. Converting the file system to NTFS is recommendable as the drive comes as a FAT32. Great value for money. Just go for it!

It does as every body else says ...Works right out of the box.

I did not install the google stuff .

Now all my mp3 and movies reside on this drive freeing up my hard drive on my pc. Best of all I can take it with me on holiday . Swap files with my family etc . Really pleased with the ease of use . It shows up as and extra drive called "my book". I just drop files into it and away they go.Very quick and quiet. Thank you to all who reviewed it and convinced me to buy one .

Instantly recognised by a variety of kit, plugs into a USB port and sits there being a drive. What more do you want from a drive? It's fast enough, though you do notice the difference between USB 1 & 2 if you're copying in bulk. This of course is nothing to do with the unit. It also looks good (or better than a beige box).

Downside - the free software supplied on the drive is litterally a waste of space. The delete key fixes this minor problem!
