I bought this to accompany my 2 year old Acer Aspire 1654WLMI Xpsp2 laptop and am very glad that I did. It's small enough to carry around anywhere and outperforms even some internal laptop HDD's with it's 5400rpm, meaning it's ideal for game intalls. For example I cuurently run COD2 and UT2004 with no problems at all which is great as both these games take up around 5GB's each.
No install disk is needed as the drive intsals itself and comes equiped with great WD software.
The drive comes pre-formated as FAT32 but iv'e heard that it can be easily re-formatted to NTFS within winXp, but personally I haven't bothered with this and can safely say that the drive performs very reliably and quickly.

In short a great drive for all Xp laptop owners, the only faults are the lack of a longer USB cable and carry case but for a whopping portable 250GB drive with a name a huge as Western Digital for under £100 who could complain?

Sorry that I havent specified Vista compatibility as I don't own a Vista PC.

Lightweight Mega-storage

My old 120GB portable HD was full and needed replacing so after a little research I chose to buy this portable HD and I wasn't disappointed.

250GB is massive for a 2.5" drive and while it is expensive in comparison to 3.5" powered HDs (you can buy at least 500GBs for the same price), portable HDs always are.

It looks sleek and classy. Unfortunately it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet (black, glossy) which made the lack of a case or sleeve for the drive very disappointing.

It weighs about the same as my wallet and has been sturdy (dropped it a couple of times already and it's had a few knocks in the old laptop case, but no faults as of yet)and in my experience WD HDs can generally take a fair amount of clumsiness and are top in terms of lastability.

It's definitely worth the extra expense over a 120GB Portable (presuming you need the space). Fast, pretty and sturdy. Just wish it came with a case/sleeve.

I have a dual boot system with PCLinuxOS 2007 and Windows XP. I have written files to this drive in XP and read them in Linux and written them in Linux and read them in XP. The transfer time is a little bit slow but I am using USB 1, however I was trasfering 9Gb of data. Over all this has been an excellent purchase and although the file system is FAT 32 I have had no problems reading/writing in Linux. An excellent choice for Linux and Windows users and if you have a Mac my collegue uses one with his Mac Book Pro without issue. A bargin at the price, well reccomended.

I have three of these now, first one just after they came out the other two over a period of time and they are just perfect. Plug in and play Windows Vista works well, VERY VERY quiet. It is small enough to put in your shirt pocket and all three have and still do work every time.

Small But Perfectly Formed Design Spoilt By Afterthought Cable

A neat solution for those (like me) with limited Laptop hard drive space.

Slippery gloss black drive case- strangely trapeziod shaped, with seperate connecting lead. The USB lead is short, 1ft short exactly... It needs to be as there is no where to keep it conveniently with the drive when it's off duty. However, my mobile and cameras all use the same lead /plug, so as one lead fits all, it's not a big issue for me.

If there was a simple carrybag to keep lead and drive together or a built in groove/tidy for the cable to stay with the drive, instead of the elastic band I use, I'd give it more stars.

Cheap and cheerful with a nod to style & a blue light to let you know it's doing it's job.

Not a bad choice for bytes per pound- if you can live with the 'after-thought' cable.
