The Companion Guide to the West Highlands of Scotland is simply the most essential guide to Western Scotland ever written. I don't qualify that opinion; it has been expressed by many better judges than I. Murray very clearly knows his country; more than that, he has a feeling for the land unsurpassed by any other writer I have read. I know much of this country myself, having travelled the sea-board from Glasgow to Durness. Murray's judgements are personal, and I don't always agree with him, but he inevitably makes one THINK, and he always has at least a valid point of view. His descriptions are vivid, and of obscure places as much as those well known. Of Crinan he writes 'The air has a clean tang; the very skies have suddenly become more spacious and the waters wild'. If you have not visited a place, Murray instills a burning desire to see it; if you have been there, he takes you back in spirit and in mind.
I own three copies of this book; a first edition hardback, a pristine new paperback and a dog-eared old paperback which was my faithful companion for twenty years and more. During all that time, Murray was the first thing I packed in my case.
Highly recommended; more than that, indispensable and irreplaceble!

I bought this in 1970. It's old, but the best guide book I have ever come across. Bill Murray has a brilliant gift for short sentences which convey the essence and appeal of a magic area. Admirable! I'm now buying it fir friends.

Even though old and out of print, the narrative, charm and personal point of view make this a delightful book to have along on any trip to the West Highlands of Scotland.

Try as he might to provide balanced history, you will never accuse Mr. Murray of lacking the passion of a good Scot for his subject. And so the landscape comes alive. Find an old copy where you can and care for it as you would an old friend.
