Product Description

An early feature from Michael Winner, this brilliantly gritty crime thriller sets its story of alienation and amorality amid the faded grandeur and seedy clubs of early-sixties Notting Hill. Alfred Lynch leads an excellent cast, and the film showcases an outstandingly vulnerable performance from Diana Dors. Scripted by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, West 11 is presented here in a brand-new ransfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

Joe Beckett, seasoned citizen of the bedsitter belt, aged about 22, is the renegade son of modest, respectable parents and, to use his own description, 'an emotional leper'. He decides that he needs a violent shock to shake him back into life, and as a result accepts a commission to carry out the murder of a total stranger for a man he meets in a coffee bar...

Michael Winner was responsible for some truely frightfull films - his home counties version of The Big Sleep is one of the most embarrassingly inept films ever made - but this early effort, before the hack cynicism set in, is fairly decent. An excellent cast, good photography from Otto Heller, sixties kitchen-sink mixed with Existentialism, Notting Hill Jazz Clubs and Coffee Bars, Race Riots and Free Love all combine to make entertaining viewing.
X Certificate at the time of release, of course it's all quaintly tame today. Brief extras Include a lovely sensational trailer and extended scenes showing the flashes of nudity the censor cut out.

Michael Winner has attracted some pretty awful criticism over the years, some of which is deserved, but he also made several good films of which this is one. Perhaps his first big budget drama, he benefits mightily from Otto Heller's atmospheric location photography, here beautifully transferred in clear B/W 1.66.1 ratio with good sound, and a script from Waterhouse and Hall which, tho it loses pace from about 45' it picks up again from the 55' mark. Also Winner handles Alfred Lynch well and he holds the film together from the acting point of view. Ably supported by the very sexy (and underused by the industry) Kathleen Breck, Eric Porter , Diana Dors (very good, radiating sex appeal-well she did for me), Harold Lang, and you can just spot unbilled Anthony Valentine and David Hemmings. One could argue that the film is dated, I suppose it is, but that didn't stop me enjoying it (I was a callow youth around the W 11 area circa 1962 =1965 so recognised many shots). Well done NETWORK (I must stop saying this), for another lost delight from the early 60's. Good price. Good quality. Well worth a look

Being more interested in the working class social realism of this film as opposed to crime/thriller element, I was pleasantly surprised that both delivered. The sets, locations, and general milieu were particularly effective and it made the performances from the older members of the cast more affecting, looking slightly adrift in this modern yet resolutely grim world. Finlay Currie was moving as a kind of modern day Miss Haversham; Kathleen Harrison feisty and sympathetic, more worldly than her usual roles; Eric Portman, extremely sleazy and unscrupulous, building on his somewhat ambiguous performances in A Canterbury Tale and Great Day. Of the younger cast members, Diana Dors gave a touching performance, both disillusioned and vulnerable. But this was Alfred Lynch's film. Having only seen him in On the Fiddle (in which he was excellent-great character development and comic timing), his performance here was enormously sensitive. He portrayed a character who while morally ambiguous, confused, and potentially murderous is also warm, humorous and hugely sympathetic.

While taking in these wonderful performances and the authentic locations I found myself equally engaged with the crime and thriller
elements...with a plot both taught and gripping. So ultimately, for me, it worked on both levels!

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, very well acted by all, and a great story. One major flaw at the end spoilt it for me which is why only 4 stars, but otherwise highly recommended.
