Garfield Owen was one of the great full-backs of his generation in both rugby codes. He played rugby union for Newport and won six caps for Wales in 1955 and 1956. He then switched to rugby league, signing for Halifax live on the BBC Sportsview programme. After five successful years at Halifax he joined Keighley, where he had a spell as player-coach. He retired from rugby league in 1965, and still lives in Halifax. This authorised biography, including a foreword by Robert Gate, covers from his early years in South Wales to his work today fundraising for research into Parkinson's disease. "Garfield Owen's brilliantly consistent play made him an almost automatic choice as Welsh full-back". Jack Davis - One Hundred Years of Newport Rugby "Rarely, if ever, have I seen a better display of the art of full-back play than that produced by Owen in this match [versus Ireland in 1956]. He was superb." J.B.G. Thomas - Western Mail & South Wales News "As a full-back in either code Garfield Owen stands comparison with the very best, a man whose dependability and sureness engendered absolute confidence in those with whom he played." Robert Gate Andrew Hardcastle is a life-long Halifax fan who is the Halifax RLFC club historian and has written widely about the game.
