This is a book for all those who want to accelerate the task of acquiring a vocabulary of modern, contemporary Welsh; for those learning, or seeking to improve their Welsh for reasons of personal interest; for those in the public and private sectors in Wales who wish, increasingly, to use Welsh at work whether in education, health and social services or in business; and for those who are inspired by the beauty of the language and its part in Wales' cultural heritage. WELSH ROOTS & BRANCHES provides an innovative approach to the problem of acquiring an easily assimilated vocabulary - namely through the ROOT structure of the language. Using this approach a vocabulary of 10,000 words branching out from about 400 selected root words is created - enough for most everyday purposes. Frequent use is made of paired words to provide a series of "hooks" or "building blocks" by which each can better be recognised and remembered. Welsh Roots 8: Branches, however, does assume a basic knowledge of Welsh grammar and of mutations. This book can be dipped into as leisure or bed-side reading; teachers may wish to use it as part of their courses and develop the root and branch system further; and readers at all levels may use it to further their knowlege of the language. Whether for leisure or for study, Welsh Roots 8: Branches is intended to be both informative and entertaining.

This is an extremely useful and interesting book for anyone learning Welsh. I have found it very helpful for building on and extending my rather limited vocabulary. After reading the introduction, I quickly found myself playing with the language rather than boringly trying to memorise lists. Really useful if you are confident with the pronunciation or have access to a native speaker to help.

I've used this with a couple of adult learner classes at various levels and all found it helpful and stimulating. My only reservation is that some of the words are 'dictionary words' that users would rarely, if ever encounter. But for group exercises in vocabulary building and developing learners' confidence in spotting related words (sometimes obscured by mutations!) this is very useful.

Intriguing and really useful too

There is a real need for a Welsh etymological dictionary. This volume goes some of the way to answering that need. The author has compiled what he describes as a directory of 'root' words in Welsh, matched systematically with the vocabulary with which they compound to create ten thousand or more words in common use. The result is a fascinating demonstration of how the language links together and has branched out.
Entries are nicely laid out in a clear typeface and are great fun to dip into for a bit of general knowledge. And the book is a really useful tool for learning and study. We would not willingly give up our copy and I strongly recommend it.
