This is a truly excellent contribution to the 38th (Welsh) Division's magnificent contribution during the Battle of the Somme. Told through the experiences of soldiers in the field, and backed by so many photographs identifying individual soldiers and officers, Dr Hicks succeeds in bringing a very human, and much needed, touch to the Division at Mametz Wood. Dr Hicks does not shy away from the fact that there were those such as Brigadier-General Price-Davies who chose to disparage their efforts and he comfortably presents the reasons why, in his own words 'this erroneous perception lingers on'. The inclusion of the German perspective adds a valuable contribution to the Battle. There is no doubt this book is to be considered as a 'must' read for anyone interested in the Division's experience during the First World War.

Voluminous and detailed research which has been presented more like a series of appendices showing the original source material. What the confused battle requires is an integrated chronology and bird's-eye view together with an insight into the fighting conditions in the wood. This book makes no attempt to supply this, which is disappointing, especially given the author's researches into German archives.

The Welsh really came of age at Mametz. Sadly so many lost young men but they did the job.

An excellent account of the actions at Mametz, and a unique way of setting out the details. Accounts from men actually there add greatly to the understanding of what they went through. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Welsh Division at the Somme.
