Format: Audio CD
Woodward's presentation of Bach's magnus opus, the Well Tempered Clavier (composed "for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study,"), is sober, refined, aristocratic and measured. There is a patience in his playing which provides the dignity which is required for this keyboard work. Sensitive and controlled, this interpretation is both subtle and durable.
Woodward's craftsmanship actually sounds quite different compared to the recording I know well by Daniel Barenboim (which is wonderful, and produces the singing effect I think Bach was after, and we must remember that Bach, for all his academic tendencies, was a red blooded male, and an incredibly passionate person and his music rests on a mantle of masculinity; Barenboim's playing has been criticised for being overly sentimental and whimsical but this is not really the case; his articulation is perfected aligned with the spirit of the work).
This CD is published by Celestial Harmonies, and that is exactly what Woodward's translations of these 48 are: there is a cosmic force behind them, sometimes gravitational, sometimes ebullient, but always delightful. This is truly thoughtful and considered playing. The information contained in the booklet is massive and Woodward has obviously spent a large amount of time researching his performance practise. Thoroughly detailed in his history and his playing, this is true champion recording!
