So, if you know me, you'll know that I am an avid Carly Phillips fan. Seriously, I cannot get enough of this woman... her writing... her mind... She's just incredible and if you haven't read any of her books— do it. Now. Her Billionaire Bad Boys series is just freaking divine. Oh, and the Dare to Love series too! In all honesty, I haven't read any of Erika Wilde's repertoire prior to Well Built, however, I have to fix that A. Freaking. SAP. These two ladies make a formidable writing team, and I am kicking myself for not reading any of their previous joint endeavours. Again, that will be fixed as soon AS.
Plot wise, I'm going to be frank, the love story aspect of it isn't the most original. This is a second chance romance and Kyle and Ella's personal story isn't fresh out of the press, however, the backstory surrounding their romance is what makes this plot as fresh as pouring rain. A lot of the friction from the backstory isn't directly to do with Kyle and Ella... and actually, it serves in making their story even more nerve-wracking. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time because I was like how is this going to pan out? How are they ever going to make it work? I just can't even begin to say how anxious I felt for them. I was cheering for them and ooohing and aaaaahing and sometimes booing, because the pair of them at times are really obtuse about their reality and how to deal with it. This plot, it had me from the get go and even when it came to a conclusion I was still slack jawed and close to a heart attack because these two, well, these two— HOT. Infuriating. Perfect.
I think it's fair to say that I may love Kyle... a little big bit. Yes, I do find him sexy as all hell and he can burn me up anytime, but, what really made him for me was his endurance (nope, not talking about his lasting power... although...) and the way in which he fights for what he wants. I'm trying really hard not to give anything away here. The circumstances between his and Ella's demise are actually really sad and tragic... and although Kyle was a contributing factor to those circumstances, personally I don't believe that he is the cause or that actually he holds the blame. However, I found that it all enabled me to love him harder. Ella on the other hand... she actually made the love story aspect for me. She was strong and stubborn and feisty and her heart is so big and so open. I just adored her, even if I wanted to deck her at times.
Kyle and Ella's give and take, their banter is just on point and really lightens the mood of the story. At times it does get somewhat murky and angsty and hard to read because of how it asphyxiates your heart. There are certain topics that will hit home for a lot of readers and indeed myself. I did find myself tearing up quite a few times. But again, their give and take sometimes takes on quite a humorous and lighthearted feel and so, it really serves to make this a great romantic comedy with a whole lot of heart and feels. Carly and Erika have really delivered a story that is packed with family drama, heartbreak and second chances. I have to give it to them because despite all the ins and outs and all of the outside factors, the spotlight never once sways from Ella and Kyle. Their chemistry, interactions, their need for each other is overwhelming and consuming and really keeps your eyes on them and where they're going. Well Built really is a readers dream— it's flawlessly developed and exuberantly written... you have no choice but to fall irrevocably in love with the story, its characters and its creators.
It's been ten years since he walked away from his hometown of Woodmont, IL. It was also the day he walked away from the only woman he has ever loved. Ella Fisher. And now he was back. For a few months anyway if his plan worked out the way he wanted it to. He knew it was going to upset Ella but it was also going to make his mom happy. And he would do just about anything to make his mom happy after everything she has done for him. It's not like Ella and her family are going to hate his family more than they do now, so why not? Then he sees her. And damn does she still make his heart race. It's going to be hard to stay away from the one that got away.
Why? That is what Ella keeps asking herself. Why is he here? Why does he have to look so f- delicious? Why can't she just stop thinking about him? It's been ten years. One big heartbreak. She should be over him but she isn't. She knows this. But she wants him. So, she gives in to what she has been craving. One night. That's all she can give him. She can do this. There is no way she could fall for him again. Her father won't allow it. And he means everything to her.
Kyle and Ella's relationship is complicated. They loved each other in high school but it's different now. One night ten years ago changed everything. Now one night in the present could change everything once again. One of them wants more while the other knows it can't happen. It won't work. They live in different worlds now. Can love be enough for them this time around?
I knew I was going to love this book from the very beginning. Second chances are one of my favorites. Add in some heated sexual tension, hate, and a small town. And it's going to be crazy. This writing duo always makes me laugh, tear up, and get all kinds of hot and bothered. The writing is just wonderful. The characters are lovable. The story is kick a-, and the gave me all the feels. I am excited for the next book. Conner is up next and I have a feeling is going to be H-O-T.
Overall...it's a fast, fun, sexy, and wonderful read.
“I don’t want you to be good. I really want you to be bad. With me.”
“You want to know what this city boy dreams about, baby?”
Make it go away, Kyle.
