Very well written short stories with a lovely central character and enthralling backstory developing. If you loved Bridge of Birds : A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was, there will scratch your itch for a China-that-never-was. (If you liked this book and haven't read Bridge of Birds yet, go and read Bridge of Birds.)

I enjoyed these hugely, will look out for the author again, and very much hope to see further adventures. Strongly recommended.

Well this was a pleasure to read - four interconnected short stories/novellas about Dao Shi, a conman, fraudulent exorcist, and reluctant hero. The setting is an unamed imperial city, with the war in the mountains a constant background. These four stories do a great job in building up the detail of the world, and how Dao Shi's personal story might connect to its wider politics and machinations. There are moments of humour here, excitement (the descriptions of the various demons are particularly good), and moments of genuine sadness too. Throughout it all the author does a great job in writing from Dao Shi's point of view, and his character is what drives these stories - somewhat vain, lover of food, but always insightful and humorous.

The author says in his afterword that if enough readers enjoy these stories there may be more - here's hoping for a Volume 2.

This is a series of four short stories about Dao Shi, a charlatan who isn't really a bad, just a man who admits to his faults but needs to earn a crust or two. As a fake exorcist, preying on the gullible isn't something he's proud of but a means to an end... that accidentally draws him into a deeper mystery.

I read this some months ago but recently spotted it in my Kindle library and felt it was just too good to go unmentioned.

The stories are beautifully told in a way that makes Dao Shi's imaginary world in an ancient China that never was seem instantly real and totally believable. Ian Rowan says he will write more of these stories if there's enough demand - I urge you to read Welcome To The Underworld and then join me in urging him to get on with it!

I loved these stories. I read this in one sitting and desperately want the stories to continue. There is nothing I can add to the other reviews in terms of plot or praise I just want to add my voice to the calls for the stories to keep going. The author does say that if enough people ask he may well continue the stories so everyone please start pleading as they are beautiful little gems.
