Product Description

Product Description

May 2011:  A man is arrested for sexually assaulting a hotel chambermaid...  Mr. Devereaux is a powerful man. A man who handles billions of dollars every day. A man who controls the economic fate of nations cannot, it seems, control his own sexual appetite. The events that followed laid bare his failures and ultimately led to his dismissal from public office.

Welcome To New York: Directed by Abel Ferrara, legendary actor Gerard Depardieu plays Devereaux:  a man consumed by his own ego, arrogance and believing nothing is out of his reach be it political power or the objects of his lust.

This film was inspired by a court case, the public stages of which have been filmed, broadcast, reported and commented on throughout the media worldwide.

Nonetheless, the characters portrayed in the film and all sequences depicting their private lives remain entirely fictional, no one being able to claim the ability to recreate the complex truth of the lives of the protagonists and witnesses in this case, about which everyone has his or her own point-of-view.

Brilliant performance from Gerard Depardieu, intense with a lot of explicit sexual scenes [although the clever lighting and camera angles hid the more explicit acts, leaving the imagination to fill in the blanks with ease].
Not the more regular role for Depardieu, who is usually the good guy and /or hero. In this he plays very rich, intelligent, sex adict who has lost his way and become oblivious between the lines you can and cannot cross in society and how money and fame can cover up his lifestyle and choices.
Brilliantly performed and a great use of camera and lighting techniques. I found this film hard to stop watching but also disturbing in many way, would not reccomend to the more sensitive audience, although I found it very interesting / intriguing for various reasons.

This film is a fictional retelling/ docudrama of the Dominique Struass-Kahn rape accusation by a New York maid in 2011. The film changes the names and adds fictionalized dramatic personal details as we see the wife (Jacqueline Bisset) upset that the case ruined HER ambitions and life. Good dramatic performances. Not a court room drama.

We are introduced to the party lifestyle of Devereaux (Gérard Depardieu) and after about 30 minutes we have an arrest. Much of the drama consists of the discussion between him and his wife. A good portion of the film is in French.

Good drama. Front loaded nudity. 3 1/2 stars

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Natasha Romanova, Lucy Campbell, Raquel Nave, Gérard Depardieu)

If the saga of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the French high official caught up in a messy, sordid sex scandal in 2011, had never happened, Hollywood or Paris (this is a joint US - French production) would have easily dreamed it up. And so enters this movie, a fictionalized account of the DSK affair (no pun intended), portraying the life and travails of Mr. Devereaux, a high French official with a ribald disposition and a seemingly insatiable appetite.

The story has all the elements of a compelling political thriller — prestigious government official with an illustrious past, allegations of sexual misconduct, clashing egos, drama, conflicting stories, spurned spouse, intrigue, and more.

And the movie delivers. If it is possible to convey the life of a sex addict in a tasteful way, the director, Abel Ferrara, does it. Devereaux moves from one playful encounter to another, until, that is, he meets his match. The charges against the real-life DSK were dismissed amid questions on the victim’s credibility and rumors of conspiracy, while for Devereaux the reasons are more ambiguous. The wife of DSK stood by her man, at least publically, while Mrs. Devereaux would have her husband to rot in jail.

There are also few actors working today who could have so convincingly portrayed the larger-than-life person of DSK than Gerard Depardieu. Not only does he still have an incredible screen presence shared by few other actors, but Depardieu also conveys DSK’s physical girth and colossal ego with pathos. Depardieu was born to play this role and delivers his best performance in years. Jacqueline Bisset as well delivers a gut-wrenching performance as DSK-Devereaux’s spurned wife.

A parental advisory here, there are numerous sex scenes in this movie.

I would recommend this movie for only one small section - almost in the middle of the film- where the main character talks directly to us as he muses over his past motivations, ambitions and philosophy. This revealing insight into his character is brilliant and almost makes the viewer forgive his appalling behaviour up to that point.
Jaqueline Bisset and Gerard Depardieu have their moments too- the argument in their rented New York apartment is brilliant acting and so intense one wonders if it was actually unscripted?
The much talked about illustrations of the the lead characters sexual activities are almost boring and not at all erotic; well filmed with good use of angle and lighting so as not to offend - only there to set the scene for what follows.
Could it have been better? Probably not, the story is a difficult one and I think the script made some important points regarding corruption of both our society and an individual who (according to him) actually had good intentions at the outset but was handicapped by his nature.
Not one to rush out and buy but for the more philosophical, well worth the time.
Naturally professional film reviewers wouldn't like it..

Brilliant : Depardieu takes over the screen , both because of his physical size and his acting ability , one of the films of the year and a perfect display of excess , greed and lust , a Caligula of our times , he is like a pig in muck , disgusting and yet utterly compelling , I was mesmerized . And despite having my own opinions of the truth behind this story he became a man I could almost sympathise with . They don't make many films like this any more , I was reminded of the marvellous Taylor and Burton with all there shouting and positions ; instead here we have Depardieu and Bisset .
