Review

Randy Brown provided an oasis of soul serenity at the end of a veritable desert of disco with his albums for Casablanca in the late 1970s, with Homer Banks’ production adding Southern Soul intensity to the bedroom styling that had proved so successful for Barry White. Randy also scored half-a-dozen R&B chart entries with singles lifted from his albums, including Top 30 hits “I’d Rather Hurt Myself (Than Hurt You)” and “We Ought To Be Doin’ It”, included here. This CD includes “Welcome to My Room”, issued on the Parachute logo in 1978, and produced by the renowned soul partnership of Homer Banks and Carl Hampton, and “Midnight Desire”, on the Chocolate City logo in 1980, with Chuck Brooks replacing Hampton as Banks’ co-producer. This pairing of albums is described on the noted Soulwalking website as “the high points of his (Brown’s) career”, and have long been sought in CD format by soul collectors, featuring as they do the zenith of sensual soul balladry along with some crisp and funky dance tracks.

The American Soul scene of the 70's and 80's produced so many wonderful artists and albums most never released in the UK and until recent years only available on hard-to-find and expensive Vinyl cuts. These two Randy Brown albums are packed with gems for real Soul connoisseurs with superb lead and backing vocals and excellent uplifting orchestrated productions. The tracks Love is all we need, Do it Baby and I'm always in the mood are worth the CD price alone. Really fabulous, you won't be disappointed..

Great to see these titles available on CD, killer vocals killer tracks. I just hope that Randy's other release "Intimately" gets the same treatment and is available soon - just buy these albums and you'll be over the moon you did!!!!

This guy is such an excellent singer I cant understand why he is not so well know. His voice is incredible. I rate him as good as Luther Vandross, and for me these two are the best Soul/R&B singers I've ever listened to.

2 coveted soul albums on 1 cd......well not quite and a huge slip up on the part of 'Shout'. Whoever bought this reissue to rest there tired vinyl will eventually notice one of the sexiest ballads ever to be committed to wax has been edited by a good 2 minutes simply because there wasn't enough running time on 1 disc. The track The Next Best Thing To Being There runs at 4.45. The original runs at 7.14, a good 2 minutes longer. All 'Shout' had to do was simply supply a second disc, one for each album. A big let down and one to bear in mind before you part with your money. I'm also surprised the other reviewers who know these albums well from their vinyl days hadn't noticed this either. If you look at the running order on the back cover it's the only track that doesn't have a time check. I'm just glad I have the vinyl from back then. So if any reissue labels are reading this please, please, please reissue this quality soul album in full. It's still waiting for a genuine domestic reissue along with Randy Brown's Intimately, Randy and Check it Out.

Was looking for this for ages to replace a lost vinyl copy of Welcome to my Room - for a long time all that seemed available were rare vinyl copies at ridiculous prices, so thrilled to find it finally released on CD. Classic old school soul with 'Too Little in Common' standout for me among many fine tracks.
