A film about the difficulties that illegal immigrants face when trying to get into the UK but also the everyday life of the people of Calais who are confronted with them as well as with the French authorities. The film is beautifuly acted and directed and gives you an excellent insight into the situation in France.
A must-see for any A.Level teacher and student (brilliant to illustrate the topic of immigration).
This film will make you think deeply and probably cry too. A masterpiece.

Other reviewers have given an indication of the basic storyline but it is a great deal more complex than can be indicated in a few lines. Why are there no other options open to Bilal to get across the channel, other than swimming? There are reasons. What is the true motive behind the actions of the swimming instructor? A plethora, as so often in life. Sadness over the loss of his wife? Sadness over the non-existent son? Depression over his own mediocre career? Disappointment after a background in high-level sports never quite fulfilled? All of these things, and maybe a few more, are behind his actions. But ultimately, all of these ulterior motives are pushed aside as his actions become motivated by a straightforward and powerful humanitarian urge: to help those less fortunate than himself. He doesn't set out to become a hero, but is inevitably drawn into becoming one.

Philippe Lioret is one of the greatest filmmakers in the French tradition today; for me, his films are a must. He knows how select his cast, how to find (or write) the screenplay and how to direct the film in a way which goes both to our hearts and to our minds. There is mostly a huge element of suspense in his films too, most particularly in this one. In the Hollywood sense, nothing happens. There are no dramatic highlights, no huge pivotal moments, just a relentless progression in the narrative. He creates suspense by more or less compelling us to identify with the main protagonists - and to become terrified about how the film is going to end.

This is a film about depression too.

The story of a Kurdish boy from Iraq who reaches Calais and is desperate to join his girlfriend in London before she is married off. His first attempt to cross the channel by lorry ends in failure then he decides to take swimming lessons and is aided by the lifeguard who hopes to re-kindle his own relationship and identifies with the boy's feelings of love and loss.

Definitely not to be missed!

A very moving story that well deserves its critical acclaim. The story setting, the musical score and of course the acting all make for a very thought provoking film. I saw it at the cinema and have ordered a copy to lend to any of my family, friends or colleagues whenever they complain about illegal immigrants.

I bought a copy of this film because it was highly recommended but, when it arrived, there were no sub-titles and there was no facility for turning on any sub-titles. I had to send it back. It was very disappointing. I tried to contact the distributor (only fair as I was going to leave a negative review here) but they did not reply to my email. My advice is not to buy this DVD until the company sorts out this problem.

This is a good film and definitely worth watching,

What makes it worth watching is the subject of immigration - an emotive subject.
The story is deep and complex and you begin to think about pre-judged remarks on immigration.

It is sad, the reality of the situation is simply that (I wont say too much as I don't want to give too much away!)

I received this dvd as a gift. What a shame I've never heard of this movie before! The storyline and the acting grabbed me right away. The movie made me feel very bad at the end. We all should re-think our thoughts about immigration, legal or illegal. In the end we're all humans!
I was lucky to receive a copy that has no problems with the subtitles at all, like one customer has mentioned.
I can only recommend this moving and powerful movie.
