Issue 38 is an eclectic mix of the old and new. Lovecraftian horror (sometimes mixed with a touch of Poe) rubs shoulders with higher fantasy, sword and sorcery, occult detectives, vampires, ghosts, witches, weird westerns, and even literary fantasy. It’s an enjoyable blend. And while the quality can be variable (there are twenty short stories and six poems, with black and white interior artwork by Allen Koszowski and a striking colour cover by Alexandra Petruk), if one piece of fiction doesn’t quite hit the mark, there are plenty that do.
There are few contemporary magazines publishing such a wide range of fiction which fits under the umbrella term “Fantasy” – most concentrate on Horror. For that reason alone I can highly recommend Weirdbook.
