This was my first Anita Shreve book but it will definitely not be my last! I had avoided Shreve's work because I had assumed that such a prolific writer would not be capable of depth and subtlety alongside beautiful prose - Ms Shreve proved me wrong.
I was drawn to the book after seeing the film; the book surpasses the film by a long way, mainly because the screenwriter changed a key moment in the plot. Shreve used a true story as the basis for her novel and swings between the past and present smoothly, helping the reader to understand the characters in both eras very well.
I have since read several of Ms Shreve's novels. Though they are not all to my taste, they are all well-written. I specifically recommend Eden Close and Sea Glass.
I only hope Jodi Picoult reads The Weight of Water and discovers how to write as well and with as much craft as Anita Shreve.
